Providing comprehensive mental health assessment of patients to determine need for treatment and
appropriate clinical placement.
Providing alternative housing for patients whose mental health needs l imit their abil ity in adjusting
to placement within the hospital.
Providing clinical interventions that reduce the patients’ level of dangerousness and allow
reintegration into less restrictive clinical and custodial placements, or for patients approaching
release dates, transition to Outpatient Clinic status when appropriate.
Assisting patients in acquir ing skill to function more safely and successfully in an appropriate
i nstitutional placement.
Uses and practices basic assessment skills (data collection) including taking and recording
temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and respiration.
Makes observations regarding patient’s physical condition and behavior and reports any significant
changes to Registered Nurse /Psychiatrist, and documents this on a progress note in the Unit Health
Record.
Mental Health Screenings to identify the patients with health needs upon arr ival to the Hospital.
Administration of medications, including hypodermic injections, noting and transcribing
medication orders and handling medication issues requested by Registered Nurse /Supervisor.
Assist with management of Assaultive and Aggressive behavior in a forensic unit.
Works with other disciplines as part of the treatment team to provide an overall treatment program
for patients.
Documents patient care in accordance with the standards of the profession and nursing policy and
p rocedures.
Reviews and notes Physician /Psychiatr ist orders for mental health patients.
Conducts clinical rounds on the unit daily to ensure all patients who may require mental health
evaluations of intervention are identified immediately and referred for follow-up, and
documentation according to policy.
Assists with the maintenance of security and safety in the Hospital.
Assists in the training of Psychiatric Technician Students, Psychiatric Technician Training
Candidates and other ancil lary staff to help create a clean, safe and therapeutic environment for
patients.
