A long time ago in a town far far away…
There lived a young girl (me) nestled between the quiet foothills of Virginia, just beyond the Charlottesville
city limits. This tale begins with my childhood survival on the farm, just your typical southern girl trudging her way
through the blistering winds of yet another December winter storm, just before dawn breaks. I was maybe five or six
years old, dragging behind me a shovel nearly twice my size to help break apart the already formed ice in the
horse’s water troughs. Fast forward to the spring as I’m helping maintain pastures that go on for miles, a seemingly
impossible task for a family of only four. As one can tell, farm life is not for the weak. It requires long hours of
agonizing stress on both the mind and body. And this was the daily routine of my childhood - work until all the
chores are completed or until it was dark outside; rest was merely a luxury.
Years pass, and the life I had once known began to change abruptly. Disagreements turned into arguments,
arguments caused fights, and those fights ultimately resulted in disgust and hatred between my mother and father.
My one family then became two, leaving a distressing scar that only time could truly heal. Life tests us in many
unique forms to reveal our true potential; perhaps this breaking point revealed my true potential and allowed me to
carry on despite being challenged in such a manner. And so I persevered.
It was at this stage in my adolescent life that I learned the true meaning of “what doesn't kill you makes you
stronger.”
On some days reality was simply far too overwhelming, so I escaped into the one world that I could creatively
control… my drawings. Armed with my sketchbook I was now equipped with a weapon capable of solving everyday
challenges; I had found my personal slice of paradise, and I liked it. Then unearthed my true inner strength and
passion, my imagination. So often I can get lost in my sketchbook; I feel that it’s within these moments that I gain
valuable perspective on my life. Yet life’s greatest experiences make for the best exercise in true creativity. So as I
grew older, I traveled across the oceans and lands, to faraway countries and even to the deepest depths of the sea.
Not only did this strengthen my creativity and inspiration, but it also showed me how we all play integral roles to the
overall mission and success of the world.
Carrying these life lessons with me, I decided to further my education by attending college (majoring in art of
course). This was the stage in my life where I learned about myself as a woman while refining raw talent into artistic
professionalism. Anxious to learn, I took a wide range of courses, from simplistic drawing to creative marketing. This
array of classes helped me to understand varying levels of artistry and business skills. I realized that the two sections
of my brain are much stronger when used in combination with one another.
Figuring out who I am and what I want to accomplish hasn't come as easily to me as it may have to others.
While I can confidently state there has never been a moment where I didn't think of myself as an artist, I am also very
aware that in many ways I am different than most. Having made this realization has gained me a higher level of
understanding and inner perspective - being ‘different’ now serves as my motivational edge to stand out from the
herd.
I take this same approach into the pursuit of a fulfilling career opportunity. I’ve discovered that I love to be
actively involved in collaborative projects, yet can also excel as an independent thinker. I am just as much of a team
player as I am a leader and can fit in either role comfortably and with ease. I refuse to allow obstacles to slow me
down; my relentless determination ensures all tasks be executed accurately and promptly. I can be quick on my feet,
pay attention to small details, and maintain my composure in stressful situations.
While the world is filled with countless wonders, I too want my life to be an invigorating adventure. An
adventure that can both facilitate continued growth and success while allowing me to leave my artistic mark on your
organization.
Sincerely,
Alexandra Gibson
