Gornja Toponica, Serbia (Full-time)

General Nurse - In several departments: Acute Psychiatric Department, Semi-

Intensive Care Unit, Psychiatric rehabilitation, Forensic Ward

Special Psychiatric Hospital Gornja Toponica is the biggest mental

health hospital in Serbia and one of the biggest hospitals in South-eastern

Europe. The hospital has about 700 patients in 10 diffenrent

departments/wards, male and female wards, from Low to High Secured and

Forensic Department.

Role: Medical Technician-Nurse on Psycho-socio Rehabilitation

Department, Acute Psychiatric Department, Department of Internal Disease.

Team leader and manager for up to 60 patients.

Duties: Triage of patients, parenteral therapy application, socio and

psycho rehabilitation, group psychotherapy, main patients care, wounds

treatment, administering medication. monitoring pulse and temperature,

quickly respond for emrgiences for different conditions (internal deseaess

or mental conditions). Taking care of all administrative tasks. Work with

patients in group sessions, work with families, organizing daily activities

for patients (individialy or in consultation with ward manager), socio and

psycho rehabilitation. Work with patients with different kind of personal

disorders (Shizophrenia, Bipolar Disorders, Cognitive Disoreders, Alcohol

and Drugs Dependence etc.)

Achievements: Due to my excellent skills and my work ethic, my

employer gave me the opportunity to participate in organisation and

development of The First Mental Health Centre in Serbia called Mediana.

06/2005 - 06/2007 General Nurse - Health Centre in Nis, Serbia

(Full-time)

Participating in opening of the First Mental Health centre in Serbia -

Mediana.

It was part of the latest approach in the treatment of psychiatric

patients in Serbia. It was a pilot project in Special Psychiatric Hospital

Gornja Toponica, Serbia for mental health care in association with Ministry

of Health, Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and Caritas (Serbo-

Italian Association). As part of the project, I was selected to participate

in a training programme for working with mentally disabled people in

Bibbiena, Italy for two months (June-July, 2006).

My main responsibility was to work with psychiatric patients in the

community and their inclusion.

My duties were: doing home visits, working as an occupational

therapist, organizing group sessions with young people, being responsible

for parenteral therapy application.

Also: improving their social and living skills, organizing and

building social supportive network with relevant instituions.

Organizing art and sport groups (painting, knitting, hand made

products), organizing selling exibitions in community.

Our aim was to help patients live as independently as possible in the

community through different trainings and therapies.

In October 2006 I participated as a speaker in a conference in Nis

organized by Ministry of Health and NGO Caritas (Italian Association) on

the prevention, preservation and improvement of mental health of population

in Serbia.

As this was the first opening of the Mental Health Centre in Serbia,

the experience gained in Italy and later at the Centre for Mental Health,

has provided me with skills to be a trainer and speaker in other

institutions about ways and opportunities to work with patients in the

community. In addition, I was responsible for continuation of this method

of treatment of psychiatric patients in other towns in Serbia as well.

My big responsibility was also destigmatization of patients with

mental health problems. That meant working with the community, organizing

promotions, organizing World Mental Health Day (October, 10th) in our

community.

11/2013-to date

General Nurse on Forensic Deparment

Because of my experience I was selected and reallocated to Forensic High

Secured Ward.

This department is for who have a mental health problem who have been

arrested, and found guilty for crime. This is position is for Nurses with

many years of experiences, knowing most of personal disorders and good

knowledge of Psychiatry, Law legislation and how do deal with different

situations and patients conditions.
