DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Medical Laboratory Technician is expected to practice safe and ethical duties within his

scope of practice. The Medical Laboratory Technician should understand his own limitations,

seeking advice and assistance when necessary. Specific duties may include, but are not limited

to the following:

Perform a variety of tests on body fluid and tissue samples. Types of tests include

analyzing blood and urine and identifying organisms from the body.

Utilize equipment that ranges from simple to complex.

Utilize sophisticated laboratory equipment to look for bacteria, parasites and other

microorganisms

Analyze the chemical content of fluids

Matching blood for transfusions

Testing for drug levels in the blood to show how a patient is responding to treatment

Phlebotomy may be required

Confer with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay

fears and elicit cooperation.

Utilize standard procedures the maintenance of positive patient identification, record

appropriate collection information of proper requisitions.
