Underwriting Supervisor/Dept Manager - Renewal Department
P & C - Hospitality Specialty
Dates of Employment: 10/16/1989 - 9/18/2014
January 2004 - Sept. 2014 - Renewal Underwriter/Department Supervisor for
Underwriting Staff
The clerical department was taken over by another staff member. I was
focused on supervising all raters, renewal underwriters and smaller book
underwriters, such as the Equipment Breakdown program and Umbrella program.
All underwriting responsibilities remain the same. I am still responsible
for maintaining a minimum of 80% renewal retention, responsible for the
integrity and quality of the book as well as handling all
quoting/requoting/binding/billing and correspondence for the entire NY
book. I am responsible for 3 other renewal underwriters' book of business
as well. These duties include checking their book periodically for quality
assurance and handling all questions &/or concerns the underwriters have as
they navigate through these risks. Handled all customer service
complaints, inquiries and disagreements between the company and agency.
Monitored the market weekly for fluctuations throughout the industry and
worked closely with the owner of the agency offering input on loss cost
multipliers and company deviation credits that needed to be changed &/or
altered to stay competitive. Was responsible for keeping up with all NY
banking laws and regulations to ensure we follow proper Dept of Insurance
rules/regulations.
Further responsibilities include managing the day to day operations with
the entire staff. Cross training staff members to cover for vacation
schedules, keeping attendance and tardy records and handling any
disciplinary actions that may need to be taken. I had a staff at this
time of about 9 people.
November 1997 - Underwriter/Department Supervisor
Was given two smaller books of business to govern. Responsible for keeping
a minimum of 80% renewal retention. Rated, quoted, and bound all renewals
for these books of business. Handled all requotes and correspondence.
Delegated the clerical duties into different areas. Cultivated the
clerical department by dividing the responsibilities into sections and
teams of employees. Was responsible to oversee the clerical staff to
ensure proper handling of the work flow and handling of all/any HR issues.
At this time, I had a staff of about 20 reporting to me daily.
During this time, slowly the entire renewal books was turned over to me.
At one point, I was handling the renewal book for 3 different carriers at
the same time. Each carrier had their own set of guidelines and
regulations that needed to be followed carefully, while maintaining my 80%
minimum retention.
November 1995 - Rater/Clerical/Underwriting Assistant
In addition to the above tasks, I began rating new and renewal business.
Trained on several different rating engines, such as MMS, PMS, Quickrate
and Rackley. Handled the paperwork correspondence for binders and all
necessary coding. Reviewed and approved inspection reports, distributed
endorsements to the correct underwriter, typed non-money endorsements,
coded, billed and typed money endorsements. On many occasions typed
policy dec pages as well to help out other staff members.
November 1991 - Additional Responsibilities added:
New duties including running credit reports for property, handling all
recommendation letters, follow up correspondence and ordering inspections.
October 1989 - General Clerk
Responsibilities included filing, typing binders, cancellations,
reinstatement, switchboard duty and logging in new and renewal submissions.
Prepared expiration reports for all underwriters as well as following up
for the bind orders.
