RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

NIH Research Protocols (July2006 - June 2007)

Treatment of Preserved Cardiac function heart Failure with an Aldosterone

anTagonist (TOPCAT)

Role: Co-Principle Investigator at DCVAMC; Principle Investigator: Michael

D. Greenberg, DCVAMC

Sponsor: NHLBI (Project Officer: Michael Domanski, MD)

Status: Completed

This study aimed to examine the safety and effectiveness of Spironolactone

compared with placebo, in the treatment of adults with heart failure and

preserved systolic function

Real-time MRI-guided balloon angioplasty of the aorta-iliac and

femoropopliteal arteries

Role: Associate Investigator; Principle Investigator: Venkatesh Raman, MD;

Co-Principle Investigator:

Michael D. Greenberg, MD

Sponsor: NHLBI

Status: Completed

The goal of the study is to explore the feasibility and safety of using MRI

as a guidance modality for PTA of the lower extremities. We hope to take

advantage of superior soft tissue imaging and reduce some procedural risks

(no ionizing radiation, no nephrotoxic contrast) with MRI. The target

population was patients with claudication and obstruction (but not

occlusion) primarily in the aorta-iliac segments who might conventionally

be managed with a conservative approach or offered traditional x-ray guided

PTA / stenting.

VA Research Projects, August 2005-July 2006

Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging Compared To Transthoracic

Echocardiography for the Measurement of Left Atrial Size

Role: Co-Principle Investigator; Principle Investigator: Michael D.

Greenberg

Sponsor: None

Status: Completed

A retrospective study where a comparison of the left atrial (LA) size was

made between the black and bright blood cMR sequences to the traditional

two-dimensional echocardiogram (2D) measurements. We found that

the 2D LA size was most comparable to the axial black blood and minor axis

2 and 4 chamber bright blood sequences.

The Veterans Affairs Computerized Patient Record System Provides An

Identical Assessment of All Cause Mortality As Compared to Methods Used In

Traditional Clinical Trials

Role: Co-Principle Investigator; Principle Investigator: Michael D.

Greenberg

Sponsor: None

Status: Abstract accepted and presented at the 2006 ACC 55th Annual

Scientific Session in Atlanta Georgia during the poster session; Completed

A retrospective study to test the efficacy of the VA Computerized Patient

Record System (CPRS) in recording all cause mortality. Mortality data were

obtained for a total of 324 Veterans enrolled in 9 multi-center clinical

trials. Trials from a variety of disciplines and sponsors were chosen.

Patient status (i.e. dead or alive) was also determined by a blinded

investigator looking solely at the CPRS-VistA medical record. Of the 65

deaths in the study population the VA electronic medical record correctly

identified all cause mortality in 97% of cases. Only 2 of the 65 deaths in

the clinical trials were not accurately detected by CPRS-VistA.

Fall 96-Summer 97, Summer 2000

Investigation of The Antioxidant Properties Of Cardiovascular Drugs

Role: Research Assistant; Principle Investigator: Dr. I.T. Mak, GWUMC; Co-

Principle Investigator: Alex

Murphy

Site: Antioxidant Pharmacology Laboratory, Department Of Physiology and

Experimental Medicine, GWUMC

Sponsor: None

Status: Completed

Dedicated intermittent time for two years during undergrad and summer of

first year in medical school investigating the antioxidant properties of

various cardiovascular drugs such as Propanolol and other cellular agents

such as Glutathione in comparison to Trolox (Vitamin E). The properties

were tested on endothelial cells extracted from mice heart cells exposed to

numerous free radicals such as FeSO4, Dihydroxyfumaric Acid (DHF) and T-

butyl hydroperoxide. Post exposure to free radicals the degree of

membrane lipid peroxidation was determined using numerous assays e.g. MDA

(Malondialdehyde), Glutathione etc. and UV Spectophometry. Due to time

constraints in medical school I left the project midway although the

project continued and since Dr. Mak has published numerous articles on this

subject.

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

National Institutes of Health / National Institute of Mental Health

(NIH/NIMH) (Fall 1995-Summer 1997)

Dedicated intermittent time for two years during undergrad education to the

care of Alzheimer's Patients. Under the guidance of Dr. Trey Sutherland

and Judy Friz, time was spent recruiting subjects for a prospective trial

studying the risk of Alzheimer's disease in first degree relatives of

patients with Alzheimer's. Responsibilities included gathering supervised

history, physical exam, administering the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment

Scale, Data Entry, Scoring and Filing. The work in progress was presented

on Poster Day (August 1, 1997) at NIH.
