MULTI-SCALE HEAT TRANSFER LABORATORY (WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE) Worcester, MA
1/2013 to 5/2014
The Multi-Scale Heat Transfer Laboratory focuses on theoretical, numerical and experimental studies in heat transfer and mass
transport enhancement in micro, meso and nano scales, in single -phase and two-phase flows, in the presence and absence of gravity.
Research Assistant
Assisted in designing mechanical components and thermal system app roaching the optimal mechanical and thermal
performance in theoretical and experimental ways. Involved several in-depth graduate projects: convectional heat
transfer experiment, fluid system control with EHD pump, hydropower collection for later use . Successfully managed an
individual project from the initial technical calculation and concept design, to the 3D Solidworks design of the
components, manufacture and assembly, to prototype validation with little supervision.
Achievements:
Accomplished an individual graduate research studying the performance of an Electrohydrodynamics(EHD) pumps,
managed all phases of the design process for a multitude of components, housing, fittings and assemblies, including
drafting, dimensioning, tolerancing and prototyping.
Assisted in designing a new EHD pump based on the previous design by simplifying its geometric al structure,
manufacturability and assembly, reduced the cost for the prototype, and addressed the previous electrical
connection using the jumper and electrical feed-through.
Developed the assembly and testing procedures for the EHD pump to validate its functionality.
Generated the 3D design for the individual components, and utilized Solidworks assemblies as guidance for the
prototype.
Collaborated in executing a convection heat transfer experiment, tested the thermal performance of different fins at
different flow rates, utilized Labview to record the data from the measurement and used Matlab to analyze the data,
finally figured out the fins that achieved the optimal convecti onal heat transfer at the corresponding flow rate.
STATE KEY LABORATORY OF CLEAN ENERGY UTILIZATION (NORTH CHINA ELECTRIC POWER UNIVERSITY)

Lab Assistant
Assisted in designing several of advanced mechanical and fluid systems to improve the utilization of the energy.
Involved in projects designing heat sink with military-level heat load using the self-oscillating heat pipe and assisted in
applying the oscillating heat pipe into the solar energy collection. Lead a team of seven, participated in National Student
Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy and Emission Reduction, brought about a new portable device with
cooling and heating functions using the solar energy.

Achievements:
Lead a team of seven, invented a brand-new portable model using a semiconductor refrigeration slice with a heating
function, oversaw the entire process from concept design, initial calculations, material and key components selection,
electrical circuit design, prototyping, testing and troubleshooting.
Creatively introduced a solar panel and a rechargeable battery as the power for the refrigeration slice, realized free
external electricity consumptions, employed a manual switch which co uld change the direction of the current applied
to the semiconductor and thus generated an extra heating function, enriched the application and brought extra
benefits for this invention.
Designed the invention lightweight with a compact size to facilitated its embedment into the clothing, applied a
patent for this device and awarded “ Creative Design Scholarship” from 3M.
Designed a heat sink for high heat load electronics using a self-oscillating heat pipe. Since the heat load exceeded
the capacity of the previous heat sink, improved the system by changing the dimensions and shapes, and compared
different settings with mathematical calculations and Solidworks thermal simulations. Finally arrived at an optimal
point where the most heat could be dissipated and the design met requirement from the client.
