Profile of My Job, at Aluminum Partners of Jamaica (ALPART)
As the head of the planning department and Maintenance Department, I
was responsible for helping the company to mine the bauxite at the
most economical cost, by having the mining units available at 90 %
efficiency. Listed below are some achievements were.
. Worked with supply chain to fully implement just-in-time inventory for
parts over US$500,000.
. Scheduling, routine, predictive and preventative maintenance
program was developed for weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly
frequency.
. Oil sample analysis programme.
. Conditioning monitoring reporting.
. Graphical reports on each equipment, with failure
analysis
. Scheduling major component replacement
. Prepared and submitted technical reports for mobile
equipment as per requirement.

The maintenance system allowed the company to improve schedule,
routine, predictive and preventative maintenance, by allowing to
forecast component working hours in relation to working life of the
machine. We were able to significantly reduce our break downs, hence
improving the PM activities.
This approach further enhanced the cost saving by negotiating with the
local Caterpillar dealer to develop a six month forecast for critical
stocks to be held on consignment on site at no cost to the company.
My responsibility, also extend to manage external contractors as it
relates to the mining units, and able to negotiate the best deal for
the company. I was also responsible to ensure that the safety
regulation that governs the industry was adhering to at all times.

Henry Walker Eltin is a mining company that was contracted to Aluminum
Partners of Jamaica (ALPART) to mine bauxite. The company was
contracted by the three major bauxite companies on the island to mine
bauxite, which was 5-year contract that ended in 2005.
I was employed as a Mechanical Engineer/ Project with responsibility
for maintenance of the mining units, which was a total of 144
caterpillar heavy mining units.
