Details of Project work : Fabrication of an Air Caster

An air caster is a pneumatic lifting device used to move heavy loads on

•

flat, non porous surfaces.

• Its operation is similar to HOVERCRAFT, as it uses a thin layer of air as a way

to float a very small distance off the ground.

• A typical air caster design uses an air bladder (small ring and big ring)

supported by steel/plywood plate, rubber tube, valves, hose pipe, pressure gauge,

reciprocating air compressor, hardware etc. When air is not being supplied to

the air caster, the bladder is empty, and the load rests on some other support.

When air is applied, the bladder inflates or blow up and presses against the

ground

• Specifications of air compressor: Ingersoll Make TS4N5 model, 2 Stage

reciprocating belt driven, 1475 RPM, tank volume: 80 US gallons, Maximum

pressure =175psig, Motor rating: 5 HP 230 V AC, Maximum Flow: 15.8 CFM.

• Dimensions of rings used : Big Ring (300 mm OD, 240 mm ID), Small Ring (105

mm OD, 65 mm ID), Valves used : size ” Carbon Steel Body

• Using above things, we were able to lift a weight of 70 kilogram with air pressure of

110 psi

• Project was executed with the help and hands of experience of professional faculty at

college.
