Title: The Relationship of the Components of an Authentic Life on Self –Efficacy and Perception of

Stress in Persons Diagnosed with Major Mental Health Disorders

Dissertation Director: Dr. Barbara Early of The Catholic University of America

Summary of Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that when persons with major mental health disorders live a

more authentic life, defined as one that is genuine to the individual, they will experience enhanced self-

efficacy and reduced perception of stress. The study was broadly framed within an existential perspective

with further conceptual framework provided by social work’s functional school and strengths perspective.

The Scott’s Authentic Living Scale was created by this social work researcher as a measure of the overall

concept of authentic living. A cross sectional survey design was utilized with data collected from face to

face interviews with persons diagnosed with major mental health disorders. Multiple Regression analysis

indicated that there was mixed support for the four hypotheses.
