“Antiarthritic and antioxidant activity of Methanolic Extract of Martynia
annua leaves in Freund’s adjuvant Induced arthritic rat model”
REFERENCES Post Graduate Dissertation
Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a progressive, incapacitating,
chronic multisystem disease of unknown cause characterized by pain,
swelling and stiffness of synovial joints.

anti-oxidants levels were determined by conventional biochemical assays.
Results and Discussion: The results indicate that, regular administration of
Martynia annua extract significantly reduce the paw edema induced by
Freund’s adjuvant in rats. Moreover, changes in body weight, ESR, Hb and
anti-oxidants levels were restored in Martynia annua extract treated group
compared to arthritis control group. The results of the current investigation
concluded, methanol extract of Martynia annua possess a significant anti-
arthritic activity against adjuvant induced arthritis and justifying its
therapeutic role in arthritic condition.
