Summer 2012, Boston, MA - Center for Human Genetic
Highlights Research Summer Intern studying Fragile X Syndrome using
induced pluripotent stem cells, through Massachusetts
General Hospital. Responsibilities included planning and
executing an independent project to evaluate the
antagonist effects of a chemical on neuron development in
Fragile X samples. Findings showed that inhibiting the
production of mutated Fragile X proteins is not a
potential pharmaceutical pathway since no significant
data was produced.
Summer 2011, Los Angeles and Catalina Island, CA - Center
for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI)
Microbiology program participant, through the University
of Southern California. The program focused on teaching
undergraduates fundamental deep-sea research techniques
with respect to microbial life.
Summer 2012, Puyallup, WA - Assistant Vet Technician
volunteer at All Creatures Animal Hospital.
Responsibilities included assisting with laser
operations, sterilizing surgical tools, kennel
sterilization, laundry, vacuuming, and bringing the
animals to and from their owners up front, as well as
completing other duties as assigned.
May 2009, Tacoma, WA - Shadowed Dr. Schweich, an
Emergency Room Doctor at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.
Duties consisted of following Dr. Schweich on shift while
she collected patient history and performed various
procedures including a spinal tap, substance overdose
treatment, teenage pregnancy, STD testing, hernia
treatment, and orthopedic procedures.
Research Assisted in Eckerd College Senior's Thesis studying
Triclosan (antibacterial). Responsibilities included
conducting SWIP tests on C. elegans to determine the
effect of the antibacterial agent on muscular function.
The research is ongoing supervised by Dr. Flaherty. The
overall goal is to determine the antibacterial agent's
effect on the development of Parkinson's Disease.
