STAR Dynamics / General Dynamics 2009-Current Direct
Senior Staff
Lead Engineer for US Army RRPP XRC Phased Array Radar receiver. Lead
engineer for Digital Control and power for 4KW XSTAR phased array solid
state 8-12 GHz transmitter. DC-DC power supply design 250 watts, 97%
efficient. Mil temperature 10-50v input, 11 output voltages, 5-40vdc output
10Amps with noise less then 10uV. Circuits can be commanded to DC-AC
inverter, or AC-DC power supply with very high efficiency. Switching
frequency: 1MHz spread spectrum. DC-DC converter has very low switching
noise level of -140 dB below output. Power supplies used for ultra low
noise radar RF amplifiers. Expert level Mentor Graphics CAD DxDesigner.
Expert level Digital and RF design for radars 8,000 watts pulsed TWT and
4000 watts CW solid state phased array radars at 8-12 GHz. Design of
digital control circuits using Xilinx and Altera FPGAs for world class RCS
Radars. Expert level VHDL programmer. Complex RF I/Q modulation and
demodulation using Altera Stratix II thru V. Expert level fiber optics
design for 40Gbps digital and 20GHz analog optical signaling to 20km

Warrior Earth, LLC 2008-2009 Direct Principal
Director of engineering covering US, Peru and Brazil. Managed 39
contractors. Work included design and deployment complex HTML5 websites
with large MySql databases. Expert level programmer in HTML5, LAMP, PHP
AJAX, JAVASCRIPT, dedicated servers, international servers. Set up company
offices in Iquitos, Peru. Directed all engineering operations in the Amazon
jungle including design and fabrication of high resolution gyro stabilized
aerial camera systems for use on Aircraft. Coordinated all flight
operations with pilots and aircraft, including management of HW and SW
engineers. Filed 5 new international patents. Managed all aspects of
company legal work, including managing 4 US lawyers, 3 Peruvian and
Brazilian lawyers and 2 US patent attorneys.
Embedded Control Systems 2007 Founder / Contract
ECS, inc Lisle, Il. Company Founder. FPGA design and and FAA
Certification Services. Filed 10 patents covering Optical Flight
Displays (OFDs) Optical radios, and the transmission of electrical
power and data over Plastic Optical Fiber. Directed flight-test
operations in a Citation I jet. Hired and directed DERs and DARs for
FAA Certification Documentation. Negotiated $400k contract from
Rockwell Collins to build airborne optical LRU which combined airdata
sensors, antennas, and FPGA controlled RF circuitry for all aircraft
radios into a single remote antenna patch measuring 1" thick. Directed
marketing and proposal efforts for live equipment demos to Rockwell
Collins, Ford Motor Company, Lockheed Martin, Bombardier., Boeing,
Gulfstream and Eclipse Aviation. Created DO-178 and FPGA DO-254
documents and FAA Part 23/25 system level documentation for Optical
Avionics. Designed TMR optical data busses having dissimilar FPGA
controllers. Left the company after selling the intellectual property
for US $6M to the board of directors.
Rockwell Collins 2006 Contract
Provided Avionics System Design and Technology Maturity Assessment for
Plastic Optical Fiber aviation applications for sending both power and
TCP/IP data over plastic, and the use of Zero Software FPGA digital
design to create flight displays without the use of traditional run-
time software.
Hamilton Sundstrand 2006 Contract
Authored FAA System Documentation for the Boeing 787 Electric Power
Systems. Design and documentation work for Optical AFDX, ARINC-429,
Copper AFDX, TTP/C bus, CAN Bus. DOORS Database. Generated DO-178/D0-
254 documentation including Requirements, and Test Procedures at
Design Assurance Level A. Worked with the latest in avionics
communications and test equipment
International Optical Interface 2005 Contract
Authored the system design for advanced optical avionics for
transmitting both data and power on board Part 23/25 aircraft. I
generated the initial FPGA DO-254 documentation and system
architecture for the world's first Zero-Software Avionics resulting in
no DO-178 documentation. Design of Optical antennas for NAV/COM/GPS
aircraft subsystems, including sending power-via-light for radios
which reduced weight, cost, and dramatically improved EMI/HIRF/EMP
performance. Generated marketing proposals and joint venture proposals
for senior management at Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids.
L-3 Communications 2005 Direct Senior Staff
Senior Staff Engineer: Candidate DER to FAA. System Designer for Advanced
Flat Screen Cockpit Avionics. Performed Requirements writing, and authored
HW FPGA DO-254, and DO-178B documentation maintained in DOORS. Design and
testing of OSI layers TCP/IP and dual-redundant MAC/PHY hardware for DAL-A
aircraft flight controls and instruments. Flight testing and integration of
all LRUs Authored documents required by the FAA to gain approval for the
800Mbs, dual-redundant IEEE-1394b (FireWire) Data Bus which linked all the
critical avionics subsystems. Assisted with system level FMEA and part
23/25 safety documentation and fault tree analysis.
Williams Innovations 2003-2004 Contract
Contract Engineer: Designed and prototyped miniature cell-phone based
wireless child tracking devices. Filed 1 patent disclosure. Designed
and fabricated rapid prototypes of GSM cell phone and GPS tracking
circuitry.
Telantis Research 2002-2003 Contract
Contract Engineer: Designed and managed prototype fabrication of the
company's first working VOIP (Voice over IP) telephone products with
PHY/MAC layer wireless protocol (802.11). Engineered a $500-per-unit
savings plan for the main product line for a projected savings of $25M
annually on estimated sales of 50k units. Performed design work in the
following areas: VHDL, FPGA, VOIP, POE, TCP/IP, CMOS cameras, LCD
displays, 10/100 Ethernet and Power-Over-Ethernet, and 12-layer high-
speed PCB design. Also assisted with some plastics and mechanical
enclosure design work. The first PCB spin with 28 VLSI chips and
10,000+ traces worked with only 4 white wires.
Goodrich 1999-2002 Contract
Design and Test: Provided HW and SW design and testing for the Potable
Water System Controller box on board the Canadair CF70 series Regional
Jets. Software was designed and tested to FAA DO-178b regulations for
level B/C use on Part 25 aircraft. Wrote and debugged software in C
and ASM to FAA standards.
Research and Development: Designed the division's first FPGA based
Aircraft Deicing Controller. (Xilinx, FAA Level B) Designed and
managed fabrication of the first working prototype. Worked closely
with the world's leading ice-scientist, Dr. Victor Petrenko at
Dartmouth College to co-invent a new low-power deicing system. Filed 3
patent disclosures. Assisted Boeing and Cessna with planning and
testing of the new system for their new jets. Performed FPGA design to
Level A/B, and authored the company's first DO-254 documentation.
Designed flight certified hardware. Worked closely with the NASA Glen
research facility (Cleveland, OH) and directed icing-wind tunnel
testing.
Telxon Corporation 1997-1998 Contract
Contract Engineer. Invented new technology for the barcode scanner
market using miniature digital camera chips instead of scanning red
lasers. Filed patent disclosures. Rapid prototyping of optics and
micro-flex PCB's. Performed engineering design work for
microprocessors and other digital and analog circuitry. Designed
wireless enhancements to existing Telxon products. Work was part of a
package which was successfully sold to Symbol Corporation.
Microvision 1996-1997 Contract
Systems Engineer on the team that delivered the first working VRD
Color-Laser-based Heads Up Display to the US Army Comanche Helicopter
Program. Contract was for $10M, and the successful delivery led to
several other helmet development programs worth over $50M in business
to the corporation. Invented and patented a 3D raster-scan maser radar
operating at 750GHz capable of seeing through concrete walls with
quarter VGA resolution at 10 frames per second.
Metanetics Corporation 1996 Contract
Worked under contract as Director of Engineering. Improved the
manufacturability of the company's barcode scanner product and set up
a working production line. Power PC and Hardwired FPGA. This small
startup company was then sold in less than 24 months for $7M cash. I
flew between Ohio and Seattle, WA on a weekly basis to coordinate
operations with the VP of engineering, headquartered in Akron, OH.
Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Sys 1994-1996 Direct
Senior Engineer Lockheed Martin Tactical DS, Akron, OH: Engineer for
Virtual Reality Research. Leader of the engineering team that prototyped
the first Virtual Reality based simulation and training systems for the
company. For that project I received the Lockheed Martin Award for
Technical Excellence. Invented and prototyped the airborne VEDS system, a
proof-of-concept virtual reality aircraft simulator for the MH-60
Helicopter comprised of portable computer and a pilot-worn VR helmet. With
the VEDS system, a real aircraft can be transformed into a mission-
rehearsal trainer within minutes. The system supports both OTW (Out the
Window) visuals and AR (Augmented Reality) avionics overlays, in real-time.
Helmets used where from the Kaiser full-color, 1024-line, Sim-Eye-60
family. Work involved modification of helmets for CCD camera mounting,
design of special HDTV chroma-keying circuitry, integration of special head-
tracking devices, proposal writing, and work with helicopter pilots at PAX
River and Ft. Rucker, AL.
Goodyear Aerospace / Loral Defense Systems 1985-1994 Direct
Senior Engineer for Aircraft Simulation Systems. This engineering work
involved all aspects of aircrew training and simulation. Specialty was in
the area of Radar Signal Simulation, and Digital Radar Landmass Simulation.
Designed custom AMD bit slide processors and custom microcode. Engineered
digital logic for the F-15 Aircraft RSS (Radar Simulation System). Invented
new concepts that won division-level technical awards. Systems engineer and
inventor of the LNOSS Parallel supercomputer, a 48-processor Intel-960
based image processing system (full Mil Spec). The work involved design of
Air-to-Air and Air-to-Ground Radar simulation, including high-resolution
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).
