J. N. Medical College Hospital, (K.L.E. Hospital & Medical Research Centre) is a 1000 bedded,

Multi speciality, University affiliated teaching private hospital. It offers speciality services like

Traumatology, Replacement Surgery, Spinal Surgery etc. The Residency programme for PG

diploma consists of 2 years training in Orthopedics Surgery.

In the 1st year Residency, I was trained in:

• Plastering techniques, use of splints and traction appliance

• Closed reduction of fractures and dislocations

• Wound management and management of compound fractures, including surgical toilet and

Debridement.

• Management of orthopedic infections including tuberculosis.

• Basic principles of plastic surgery such as wound management and suturing, skin grafting,

basic flaps, soft tissue reconstruction etc.

My duties during this period included:

• Ward duties

Daily round of inpatients

Wound dressings

Detailed work up of patients

Pre-operative evaluations and planning of surgery

• OPD Duties

Attending to new patient and follow-up of old patients.

• Emergency Duties

2 days a week during which I attended and managed various types of trauma cases including

Patients in the Casualty room.

• Theatre duties

Attending theatres thrice a week to assist and operate under the guidance of the senior

members of the team.

During the 2nd year of Residency, I was trained in the management of complex orthopedic

Trauma and was able to assist in surgeries like:

• Interlocking, intramedullary nail fixation of fractures of long bones.

• Acetabular fracture fixations/Pelvic Fracture/Anterior-Posterior Fixation.

• Fixation of complex intra articular fractures including ankle fractures, elbow fractures

Proximal tibial fractures etc.

• Total joint replacement arthroplasties of hip and knee - Hip – cemented / uncemented

• Repimplantation surgeries for amputated fingers, forearms etc.

My duties included:

• Managing orthopedic wards

• Managing outpatient clinic and casualty/ emergency duties

I was exposed to various techniques in spine surgery, pediatric orthopedics, vascular surgery for

traumatic lacerations of major limb vessels and deformity correction and limb lengthening.
