Southern New Hampshire Health System 2007 - Present
Director of Information Technology
The Southern New Hampshire Health System is a 188 bed integrated delivery
system consisting of 2 hospital locations, Ambulatory Care Services,
Psychiatric hospital, Health & Human Services, and Outpatient services.
With over 450 physicians and over 2500 support staff, Southern New
Hampshire Health System is committed to improve, maintain and preserve the
overall health and well-being of individuals living in the greater Nashua
area by providing information, education and access to exceptional health
care services.
Reporting to the CIO, selected to lead the organization's Information
Technology, architecture, functions, evaluate new vendors and strategic
initiatives in support of a $420M non-profit organization. Currently acting
as the non-official associate CIO/CTO as the current CIO splits his time
50% CIO / 50% Physician. Supporting 2500 employees at 70 medical
practices and 3 major hospital site locations. Manage 18+ direct/indirect
reports. Assisted with the development of the clinical systems strategy
that has incorporated plans for clinical systems including CPOE, EMAR,
nursing documentation and unified web portals. Prepare a fully
accountable multi-site IT budget. Manage organization's daily information
technology needs, that include developing and implementing the
organization's network infrastructure, multi-site data centers,
encompassing local and wide area networking, internet connectivity,
telecommunications, SAN, server / desktop administration, and technology
procurement. Redesigned the SAN, core network, remote access, and virtual
server environment (VMware), to gain efficiency, scalability and cost
savings. Outsourced the Support Center to provide 24x7x365 service.
Prepared and executed service level agreements for critical business
applications. Negotiate and approve contracts agreements with suppliers,
distributors, federal and state agencies, and other organizational
entities.
Selected Achievements:
. Implemented Project Management Workflow - Implemented web-based
project management request system and implemented a formal change
management system (working toward an ITIL work environment).
. Lean Green Belt Training - Reviewing IT related workflows in order to
reduce waste. The goal is to facilitate the design of an improved work
environment that is patient centered, flexible, efficient, and
affordable.
. Support Center Outsourcing (first level only) - Outsourced the 1st
level support center functions to provide a full 24x7x365 support
model. The prior support model consisted of 5 full time employees
supporting only the 1st shift Mon-Fri. Our current ticket volume is
about 2000 events per month. Outsourcing this group has enabled the
organization to save over $78,000 annually.
. Data Storage - Purchased and installed redundant EMC SAN and Dell
EqualLogic environments using DataCore's storage hypervisor design.
Currently managing 600+TB fully automated redundant storage
environments. Also implemented Dell's iSCSI SAN to reduce the cost of
storage of our current SAN architecture. Prior to the Equalogic
arrays we had 250TB+ of 2nd and 3rd tier storage stored on expensive
EMC SAN disks. Implementing this new iSCSI SAN has reduced our
overall cost per GB (2nd and 3rd tier storage only) from $8.25/GB to
$1.50/GB.
. RSA - Working with RSA, I was successful convincing RSA to offer their
Adaptive Authentication solution, to SNHHS, with an affordable cost
structure. RSA has never offered this product to a company our size.
Their normal pricing structure was based on millions of users and not
hundreds of users. This new pricing model will save SNHHS about
$80,000 over the next 5 years and has provided us with 1200 licenses
vs. the current 450 licenses. Prior to this new RSA-Adaptive
Authentication method we used a 2 factor authentication, with physical
tokens and personal pins. This was a costly solution for SNHHS. We
had 450+ tokens for remote access. Most physicians have multiple
tokens for each hospital they work for. Having to carry multiple
tokens was frustrating for the physicians.
. Microsoft's Application Virtualization - Workstation deployment was a
struggle, at SNHHS. We are using VMWare's ThinApp software
virtualization solution to help improve the workstation deployment
process and support. We have created a process that installs software
layers based on security groups. We have a centrally managed solution
for all major software installs. This has helped with security as
only the authorized users will be able to access the software.
. Reorganized departmental structure to improve customer service and
accountability. Customer satisfaction increased over 100% in the
first year. This percentage has been measured using satisfaction
surveys.
. Created, managed and maintained $5M+ IT budget to fund IT initiatives
and maximize investments.
. Analyze operations to evaluate areas of potential cost reduction,
program improvement, or policy changes.
. In 2007, SNHHS had about 25 servers virtualized using VMware. Today
we have over 400 servers virtualized. We are now about 75%+
virtualized. We have used the P-V conversion to replace old hardware
and create a new redundant platform for an older system. Purchased
new hardware for our ESX environment that allows us to have 40:1 ratio
of server per ESX host. The cost savings from replacing old hardware
as paid for the new VM hardware. A single software upgrade project
had $100,000+ savings on hardware because of virtualization. Total
cost savings since the new VM environment has been deployed is almost
$400K.
. Redesigned the current network infrastructure with our Senior Network
Engineer. The prior design was not scalable and lacking the
performance needed for core applications. We now have Cisco Nexus 5000
switches for our SAN and Cisco Nexus 7000's with 10Gig capability.
. Redesigned the WAN. Each one of our remote facilities all had
redundant WAN links that needed to be manually failed over. The new
architecture utilized both circuits in an active/active role and
doubled the capability for each location. Where possible we reduced
the bandwidth needed for each location, for a cost savings of about
$35K per year. Also changed the routing protocol from RIP to a more
efficient routing protocol OSPF.
. The wireless infrastructure was not performing well, when I arrived in
2007. SNHHS had multiple unplanned wireless outages a month. Meet
with a new wireless vendor, Aruba and replaced the Nortel wireless
vendor. Within one month, installed the new wireless network while
the existing network was still in place, we cut over the new network.
We now have 99.99% uptime for the AP's.
. Replaced outdated white/black list proxy server with the Websense
Security Suite. The Websense Security Suite has enabled SNHHS to be
more secure by blocking Malware/Spyware sites. It has also enabled
SNHHS to provide better and more efficient access to reporting for e-
compliance. Negotiated a 75+% discount off of list price with
Websense.
. Re-evaluated and updated disaster recovering operations / business
continuity plans.
. SSO / VDI Rollout- SNHHS has 10+ critical applications that are not AD
integrated. In order to improve ease of use for our software
applications, I proposed the use of a Single Sign On solution.
Evaluated several vendors and selected Healthcast. Benchmark testing
proved a 2 - 5% efficiency gain in productivity for all clinical
staff. This product also has the ability to perform self-service
password resets. Prior to this deployment, 40% of the Support Center
requests were for password resets. This percentage should drop once
SSO is fully enabled throughout the organization. We have also
created a fully redundant VDI solution which we are rolling out with
the SSO solution to allow a roaming workflow. We are about 10%
completed at the moment.
Projects in progress:
. Evaluation of new inpatient and outpatient EMR system - We
are currently using GE Centricity and Siemens Soarian for
our EMR's. We are evaluating both EPIC and Cerner for the
future of our organization. We would like to have a single
solution for both inpatient and outpatient systems.
. BYOD - Currently evaluating several systems for deployment
of a BYOD environment to expand the capabilities of our
providers and employees.
. VoIP -- Spearheading a major project to replace our current
key line system with a more robust and redundant phone
system. We have selected ShoreTel as the VoIP vendor of
choice. We are in the process of implementing all of the
mobility and UC functions of ShoreTel to improve workflows
within the organization.
. RFID and Assessment Management System -- Working with many
other department heads, we are in the RFP process of
evaluating products for workflow improvement and better
assessment management.
. Video Telesitter - We just purchased the Video Telesitter
product from AvaSure. We will be implementing this
technology in 20 of our critical care patient room. We
also have several portable units, which will be used in
less critical care rooms.
