high-frequency noise, or hiss, during replay of analogue magnetic tape

recordings. The higher frequency signals are boosted, and then reduced in

a filtered form, helping to eliminate 'hissing'. The system was developed

by US physicist Raymond Dolby in 1965. It has become less important with

the advent of digital audio systems such as compact disc, MP3, and

digital audio tape.Q
