Correction Officer
NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, East Elmhurst NY April 1991 – Sept 2014
Utilize expertise in all areas of security developed throughout over 23 years of dedicated service to
provide exceptional leadership and security oversight. Initially supervised up to 200 inmates, while
providing care, custody, and control of inmates in strict compliance with policies and procedures.
Subsequently received additional responsibility of providing care, custody, and control of 14,000 inmates
on a daily basis, including conducting searches of facilities for breeches of security, fire hazards,
dangerous articles, and contraband.
Closely monitor radio transmissions and CCTV monitors for unusual activities and follow up
accordingly.
Selected to provide oversight of security at Rikers Island, New York City’s main jail complex. Also
participated in recovery efforts during significant events, including 9/11, Katrina, Haiti earthquake,
and super storm Sandy.
Participate in comprehensive security training, which assists in the development of extensive security
skills, and expertise in crisis intervention.
Maintain accurate logs of all equipment, keys, and radios assigned to personnel on and off Rikers
Island. Adhere to policies and procedures for individuals gaining access to Rikers Island.
Conduct fire alarm drills along with drills specific to Rikers Island; train staff in emergency
procedures and advise staff in "shut down" procedures. Dispatch patrols to alarms and verify
disposition.
Provide a safe environment for staff and visitors through adherence to extensive policies and
procedures.
Conduct interviews with persons regarding theft or loss and perform DVR verification.
Handle complaints and disputes with inmates and visitors; quickly address situations prior to
escalation.
Develop personnel schedules, ensuring all posts are properly manned, including coverage for meal
periods and tours.
Complete a daily checklist of all equipment, such as CCTV, personal body alarms (PBA), handcuffs,
leg irons, and cuff keys. Patrol 400 acres of Rikers Island and all facilities, while noting any and all
observations.
Communicate, participate, and effectively collaborate with other departments and outside agencies,
such as NYPD, FDNY, EMS, PAPD, OEM, and OCME.
Consistently communicate information to team members and supervisors relevant to security and
safety; utilize e-mail, text messages, and telephone for timely communication.
Perform a broad range of additional tasks to achieve daily goals and objectives.
