Leadership Philosophy

My leadership philosophy parallels the way I try to live my life to fulfill all of my

responsibilities to the very best of my ability based on strong ethical values. The

standards and expectations that I set for myself and strive to achieve are based on

information learned from books, conferences, experiences, and interactions with

colleagues engaged in social change, community development and business/corporate

ventures. I grew up a very conservative, Latin-American Catholic, and was heavily

influenced by Neo-Aristotelianism, Jesuit Liberation Theology, the International

Declaration of Human Rights, and the principles of the American Revolution and our

Constitution. I believe in being an active & engaged citizen, worker and family

member. I constantly strive to enhance my leadership & communication skills while

keeping before me what I value most integrity, social justice and compassion.

I seek to empower those whom I lead and manage to establish and achieve

personal and shared goals. As a role model, I try to set an example and inspire a

shared vision. By providing opportunities for professional growth, strengthening

individual skills, and enhancing group relationships, I endeavor to challenge each

person to reach his or her potential. I seek opportunities to recognize the achievements

of others and celebrate their accomplishments. It pleases me to observe and reward

the professional growth and contributions of those whom I have helped. I am even

more please to see when my manager and peers begin to return the “diffuse & mutual

reciprocity” I seek to foster in all my environs.

Leadership Style and Approach

Openness certainly characterizes my leadership style because I believe and value

respect (treating others the way I would like to be treated), honesty (living a life

characterized by honorable and trustworthy actions), and responsibility (being morally

Page 1

accountable for my actions). I always have been accessible to all personnel while

encouraging those who report to me to discuss any problem or issue with me candidly.

I try to actively and compassionately listen to each person and empathize with his or

her individual circumstances. I openly explain the rationale for decisions I make as well

as directly answer questions. In fact, don’t ask me a question; you don’t want an

answer to. You’ll always get an answer. Personal comments I have received and formal

reviews conducted by subordinates, peers, and supervisors indicate that I demonstrate

highly effective oral and written communication skills: everyone just wishes I could

learn to be more concise in my written perambulations.

I always try to use a decision-making style that matches the situation. I prefer to

achieve consensus through active involvement of all concerned about an issue. Prior to

making decisions, I strive to obtain as much information and data as possible, including

from individuals with diverse perspectives. I seek information, data, and others'

perspectives before deciding what should be done because I value others' input

individually, in small groups, and in large groups. I am confident in my ability to assess

the big picture as well as to understand the implications of decisions that I make. If I

err in my judgment, I willingly accept responsibility for my mistake and make

appropriate changes.

I consult with individuals regarding items of interest to and impacting them.

These may deal with policy matters, instructional concerns, professional development

opportunities, facility problems, or personal matters. I often seek another person's

advice on an issue that I know is of particular interest to him or her. These

consultations provide me with valuable information in making decisions that are timely,

acceptable, and of the highest quality.

Adjectives that could describe me include committed, dependable, task-oriented,

organized, practical, systematic, thorough, and hard working. I prefer to work with

professional colleagues who focus on facts and results. I can be counted on to get

things accomplished on schedule or earlier, to pay attention to detail, to honor

commitments, and to work effectively and efficiently within the organizational structure.

I use experience and factual knowledge to make decisions, serve as a role model for

Page 2

reliable and consistent performance, and loyally respect traditional, hierarchical

approaches, even when acting outside the box.

One leadership strategy or approach that I prefer to use is to give a staff

member or colleague full responsibility and authority for a delegated duty and then hold

him or her accountable for the results. Prior to delegation, I ask for interested

volunteers or try to match individuals' previously demonstrated expertise with the task

at hand. I am willing to discuss the issue broadly and to set parameters for satisfactory

job completion. I request to be kept informed and will help formulate alternatives to

assist the person in resolving the problem within his or her area of responsibility.

Realistic performance expectations and deadlines are established. When the task is

successfully completed, I enjoy praising, recognizing, and rewarding the person for a

job well done.

Another leadership strategy that I use and advocate is goal setting. I believe it is

essential for professionals to establish expectations for themselves in the fulfillment of

their job responsibilities. Each person's goals are used in periodic reviews to assess

performance and as a basis for setting subsequent goals. My professional and

administrative goals are shared with my supervisors and subordinates and are used for

their assessment of my performance, and, thus, I hold myself to a high, public standard

of performance.

Overall, my leadership style and strategies could be described as a commitment

to & passion for excellence. As a manager & leader, I am equally dedicated to the

accomplishment of goals and development of people. Like a teacher who wants his or

her students to learn, my desire is to guide, encourage, and facilitate each person in

the achievement of personal and shared goals while helping everyone feel a sense of

accomplishment and receive well-deserved rewards. Like a coach, I want to build a

team of committed professionals who trust and respect each other and collaborate for

optimal results. As a leader, I want to influence others to work collaboratively to realize

our shared vision.

30 people have recommended Carlos

"Mr. Camargo is one of the most brilliant people I have ever come across. He is highly intelligent

and charismatic. He has exceptional leadership, time-management, decision-making and

team-building skills. He was instrumental in the development and leadership of the projects at

Ohana Learning and he had an uncanny ability to bring out the best in all of us. Many of the skills

that I've learned in business and management was because I learned so much from the leadership

of Mr. Camargo. I highly recommend Carlos for any endeavor within any position within

management. Carlos is without a doubt one of the best that I have ever had the privilege of working

with."

Peter Kim (*********@******.***), E-commerce manager, Ohana Learning, reported to

Carlos at Ohana Foundation for Technical Development and Ohana Learning

"Carlos' intelligence combined with his experience in the fields of technology and learning make him

exceptional. His sense of humor and passion for education make him a pleasure to work with."

Amanda Reilly, Donor Relations Manager, The Tech Museum, worked indirectly for Carlos at

The Tech Museum of Innovation

"I have known Carlos Camargo for nearly 5 years. He is an outstanding resource and advocate for

improving STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education and lifelong

learning, both in K-12 schools, in informal, free-choice learning settings (e.g, science/technology

museums) and in the community. He was a major central advocate and collaborator with me and

my DesignWorlds for Learning and Stanford team in developing a major recent proposal we

submitted to the NSF (National Science Foundation) for helping young people find, explore and

navigate future STEM career opportunities while they are still in middle and high school. He has an

outstanding network of connections and an excellent way of "connecting the dots" between people,

resources and funding opportunities. He also has extensive management experience, including

being the former Executive Director of the Institute for Computer Technology in Silicon Valley. I

would welcome any opportunity to work or collaborate with Carlos in these areas in the future and

I am happy to highly recommend him to others, as well. Ted M. Kahn, Ph.D. CEO & Chief Learning

"Dr. Camargo is a well rounded and confident Director of Development. He is very responsive to the

needs of the organization for which he is working, but also that of the donors, sponsors and grants

themselves. He took great care in understanding what the organizations needs were first, and how

with funding we could scale our programs. He consistently kept all departments alert of funding

opportunities, but also of reporting needs. He was very successful at listening to what our program

sponsors wanted as a record of progress, and made sure to cultivate those relationships. While

working with Dr. Camargo, I watched as he mentored the people around him to better understand

grant writing, reporting and program evaluation. He served as a catalyst for growing our institutional

capacity to apply for larger and larger local, state and federal grant opportunities. It is with great

pleasure that I recommend Carlos Camargo. Sincerely, Alysia Rueda Caryl"

with. His background is enormously broader than his title (Director of Foundation Relations) would

suggest, and includes education, ESL, finance, computing, missionary work, aircraft maintenance

and a great deal more. Carlos is also an intellectual omnivore, and this breadth of knowledge and

skills informs all his work. He is a source of countless ideas and boundless energy, and working

around him is a rare pleasure."

Robert Stephenson, Community Architect, The Tech Museum of Innovation, worked with

"If there is ever anyone who I'd want to work for, with or just next to it is Carlos Camargo. When

where we needed to go, and how to organize to the benefit of students and teachers. His

enthusiasm is boundless and he sense of humor rollicking. Carlos has a deep, brillant knowledge of

education, fundraising and people. After I was laid off at ICT, I worked with Carlos for a year on

assistance as Spanish spokesperson for the museum has helped us move quickly in growing our

relationship with the Hispanic community. His knowledge and contacts in the non-profit community

has been extremely beneficial to The Tech. Thanks, Carlos for all your effort and support."

Elizabeth Williams, Senior Director, Marketing, Membership and Sales, The Tech Museum of

Innovation, worked with Carlos at The Tech Museum of Innovation

"Carlos was a wonderful boss to work for! His natural charisma and ease with which he interacted

with collegues made work fun and exciting, never a chore. His management style was very

collegial; he welcomed and respected new ideas and sought to develop the talents of those around

him, always with the purpose of providing our customers a focused, relevant product. No proposal

or project was left to chance; Carlos thoroughly researched funding opportunities, contacts, and

supplemental product materials. He always shared this knowledge with team members to better

prepare them or simply to offer knowledge. Nothing was ever impossible for him, even the

seemingly long-shot opportunity had relevancy. I was constantly amazed at his ability to strategize

Page 10

through the intricacies of a RFP and capitalize on it nuances. Most of all, he sought to truly create a

professional team environment, not simply pay lip-service to the team concept. My successes were

his and his were mine, something that inspired me to acheive more for our team. Additionally, he

always introduced me as a colleague, never an employee. How many bosses do that? They don't,

but this is one of the many things that makes Carlos so special as a manager. Any organization

would benefit from Carlos' infectious enthusiasm, professionalism, incredible skill set, and

determination."

Kim Andrade, Grant Writer, The Tech Museum, reported to Carlos at The Tech Museum of

Innovation

"In all my years of working, I have never seen anyone have such an immediate and profoundly

positive impact on an organization as Carlos has. He truly hit the ground running and very quickly

established himself an excellent resource and guide to so many people and functions; his

knowledge, experience and insights have changed the game at The Tech. Carlos is also an

amazing relationship-builder, both in-house and with external entities, and because he has deep

academic, non-profit and industry experience, he seems able to navigate any situation or

opportunity. I enjoy every interaction with Carlos, and appreciate that he keeps the bar high for us

all."

Lisa Croel, Tech Challenge Program Director & Corp. Communications, The Tech Museum of

Innovation, worked with Carlos at The Tech Museum of Innovation

"Carlos hit the ground running from the moment that he started with us and opened avenues that

we did not know even existed. He is the most strategic and action based person that I've ever

worked with. He is brilliant, fun, professional and a true asset that raised the bar for his entire

department."

Bill Fisher, Sr. Director of Program Sales, The Tech Museum of Innovation, worked with Carlos

at The Tech Museum of Innovation

"Carlos has been my advisor at the Women Leaders for The World 2008 program within the Global

Women Leadership Network (GWLN). My passion to promote social and environmental justice

through market solution has made me a social entrepreneur working with fair trade with the

Brazilian impoverished communities. At my endeavor, I have encountered several challenges to

make the model economically viable; and Carlos has been a key person to further develop my

leadership skills and success. Carlos has a truly remarkable skill - to be able to add that extra gas

needed for those additional miles needed in darker moments that every entrepreneur and leader

goes through on their journey. His ability to understand and crack problems, wide network and

amazing communication skills has been extremely inspirational and motivational for me. He

constantly lights my brain up!"

Bedy Yang, was Carlos's client

Page 11

"Carlos is a wealth of information about the non-profit sector, especially in the fundraising area. His

vast experience, connections and strategic thinking have been very valuable in the development of

Global Women's Leadership Network's (GWLN) fundraising plans. It is truly a great pleasure to

work with Carlos."

Sema Basol, Leader, Global Women's Leadership Network, was with another company when

working with Carlos at Arete Management Consulting

"I had the pleasure of partnering with Carlos during my tenure at NASA Ames Research Center. I

was impressed with Carlos' enthusiasm, endless energy and commitment to his partners. Carlos

does not hide his passion and sincere commitment to improving education and he is a master at

networking and connecting people with a common purpose."

Christina O'Guinn, Informal Education, Lead, NASA Ames Research Center, was with another

company when working with Carlos at Institute of Computer Technology

"Carlos is the paragon of an effective leader. In addition to his business acumen, charismatic

personality, Carlos has a broad-reaching understanding of how to use technology to build

community. At Anew America, Carlos demonstrated a keen ability to plan and implement program

management, development and strategy. Carlos is exceptionally talented, while sufficiently

confident in his own abilities and aware of the benefit of open collaboration, to successfully create

an atmosphere of trust and exploration. At Anew America, Carols facilitated a healthy and

productive work environment where all involved (from program participants to staff and external

stakeholders) were encouraged to contribute their best and join together to create a highly effective

organization. To this end, Carlos established and maintained appropriate systems for measuring

necessary aspects of operational management and development; monitored, measured and

reported on operational issues, opportunities and development plans and achievements within

agreed formats and timescales; managed and developed direct reporting staff; managed and

controlled departmental expenditure within agreed budgets; liaised with other

functional/departmental managers so as to understand all necessary aspects and needs of

operational development, and then kept his team fully informed of operational objectives, purposes

and achievements; maintained awareness and knowledge of contemporary operational

development theory and methods and provided suitable interpretation and professional

development to his faculty and staff; contributed to the evaluation and development of operational

strategy and performance in co-optation with the executive team, while moving great ideas of his

staff up the ladder and simultaneously giving credit where credit was due; and, finally, ensured

activities were met and integrated with organizational requirements for quality management, health

and safety, legal stipulations, environmental policies and general organizational responsibility.

Carlos demonstrates an extraordinary cultural sensitivity that is informed by his own bi-culturalism

and willingness to be himself in a world that often demands conformity to limiting standards. At

Anew America Community Corporation, Carlos drew out complimentary social, economic and

political attributes of significantly differing individuals, programs and businesses to ensure success.

Page 12

In this way, Carlos expertly balanced conflicting demands of the enterprise, board, staff and all

stakeholders in order to fulfill the organization’s immediate objectives and long-term mission. I

would work with him again in a heartbeat."

Pamela Snyder, MBA Sustainability, Consultant, Anew America Corporation, reported to

Carlos at AnewAmerica Community Corporation

"I worked for Carlos at ICT and view him as an energetic, enthusiastic, creative individual who is

passionate about advancing missions in which he believes. He is a very "quick study" who can

manage a variety of diverse projects and will not micromanage. With many years in industry and

nonprofit organizations, he networks consistently and tenaciously to promote ideas and new

business."

Jeanne Ulrich, Director of Operations and Human Resources, Institute of Computer

Technology, reported to Carlos at Institute of Computer Technology

"Passionate. That's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of working with Carlos. His zeal

and enthusiasm are contagious. He is an ardent proponent of his positions, but he’s always willing

to listen to, and include, the thoughts of those interested enough to speak up. I miss being able to

easily call on his advice and advocacy, and hope our paths cross again soon."

Stephen Fox, Intel Education Marketing Writer, Institute of Computer Technology, worked

indirectly for Carlos at Institute of Computer Technology

"I have worked with Carlos for about a year and enjoyed his tenacity and conscientious character.

Carlos is very focused and endeavors to complete any task that he works on. Carlos is extremely

competent and both his communication skills, both written and verbal are excellent. There is

nothing that Carlos is not able to take on and not perform a superb job. I highly recommend Carlos

for any position or endeavor that he may seek to pursue. He will be a valuable asset for any

organization."

Libbie Feroben, Administrative Assistant, ICT, reported to Carlos at Institute of Computer

Technology

"I am pleased to be able to provide this letter of strong recommendation for my previous supervisor

and employer at the Institute of Computer Technology (ICT) in Sunnyvale, California, an esteemed

non-profit educational institution for over two decades. Carlos served as ICT’s Executive

Director/Superintendent during that time, and directly supervised me as K-12 Curriculum

Developer/Grant Writer, from late November 2006 through the fall of 2007. ICT’s trademark mission

was to “Transform Education Through Technology”. Dr. Camargo is an extremely articulate and

verbally astute individual, and would be a superb and innovative teacher/professor, or researcher in

the instructional-educational field. His knowledge of STEM-related fields is immense. During his

time at ICT when he was looking for further opportunities for growth and transformation, he was in

touch with almost every technology in education-related institution in the greater Bay Area, with

Page 13

literally dozens of personal contacts (including other Superintendents, key professional educators,

and district leaders). He was an endless reservoir of creative ideas about how to plan and proceed

strategically, and about how to use best practices to incorporate technology into the classroom. He

regularly lobbied and attended sessions in Sacramento in order to further the use of technology in

schools, and was a strong advocate for education, with a complete understanding of the complex

pedagogical issues involved. He led ICT during a difficult transitional period, when exceptional

levels of executive leadership and decision-making had to be exercised. He provided program

management and a vision and strategy to achieve ICT’s goals, and was a consensus-seeker at all

levels. He was strongly supportive of providing professional development and growth to all of his

employees during his tenure there. He could sometimes be overwhelming in the amount of

information that he shared with colleagues – which he often acknowledged by saying that he

needed to be more concise – especially in his written communications. Furthermore, he was a

fully-integrated user of technology himself, capable and fluent in the use of technology for carrying

out his own professional duties. He was also an expert in Internet-based and collaborative learning,

especially hybrid and online learning environments. He was always concerned about the issues of

diversity and how to promote fairness and equal opportunity, and the use of the most effective

strategies when working with economically-disadvantaged students. Carlos has a very strong

streak of personal and business-oriented integrity that he continually applied to his work. If you

need any further information from me regarding this letter of reference, please do not hesitate to

contact me."

Tim Dirks, Manager Online Courses/Training - Curr. Developer, Institute of Computer

Technology (ICT), Sunnyvale, CA, reported to Carlos at Institute of Computer Technology

"Carlos is a visionary leader with tremendous capacity to consume and integrate vast amounts of

disparate and vital information. In addition, he quickly and effectively integrates that information into

his planning and decision making processes. Carlos has a great deal of integrity and always works

to protect and enhance the welfare of ICT and ICT’s employees."

Harley Christensen, Associate Executive Director; Director of Strategic Communications &

Development, Institute of Computer Technology (ICT), reported to Carlos at Institute of Computer

Technology (ICT)

"Carlos is hard-working, energetic and passionate. In addition to bringing enthusiasm and

intelligence to his endeavors, Carlos also has a great ability to inspire those energies in the people

that he works with."

Kathy Paxson, Program Manager, AnewAmerica Community Corporation, reported to Carlos at

AnewAmerica Community Corporation

"I had the honor of working with Carlos both as a peer and direct report during our joint time at

AnewAmerica Community Corporation, a micro-entrepreneurship program for new immigrants.

Carlos was responsible for leading our Technology Literacy programming and also served as

Page 14

program director, providing oversight in the planning and implemention of our business training

programs. Carlos possesses tremendous leadership skills, ingenuity and enthusiasm. He has the

ability for strategic visioning and can easily shift his thinking to help troubleshoot operational details.

Carlos has wonderful communication and interpersonal skills, an infectious sense of humor, and

can personally connect with a broad range of stakeholders, from corporate funders to an immigrant

family from the low-income community. Most important, I can always rely on Carlos to bring his

sense of honesty, fairness, integrity, and compassion to any pursuit!"

AnewAmerica Community Corporation

"Carlos is an inspirational leader who helps his team achieve set goals while increasing team

morale and skill-sets. He is definitely one of the best managers I have had the privilege to work for.

Ohana was a constantly evolving company with new directions and new products emerging at a

quick pace and Carlos always knew how to best utilize the group to deliver on whatever direction

was given to us. Carlos is a wonderfully intelligent manager who invests in his team members

personally and is gifted at working towards the larger company vision while staying equally focused

on the all important details. I can't say enough good things about Carlos, a fantastic visionary and

team leader."
