PROJECT SYNOPSIS

Project Title: “Removal of Iron from water by using Membrane Technology”

Description: Innovative processes for treating industrial wastewater containing heavy metals

often involve technologies for reduction of toxicity in order to meet technology-based treatment

standards. This project reviews the recent developments and technical applicability of various

treatments for the removal of heavy metals (Iron) from industrial wastewater.

Iron is one of the most troublesome elements in water. Although iron is an

essential mineral for human, its presence in ground water above a threshold level make the water

unusable mainly for aesthetic considerations such as discoloration, metallic taste, odor, turbidity

and staining of laundry. A particular focus is given to innovative physico-chemical removal

processes such as; membrane filtration, Oxidation, and Ion exchange. Their advantages and

limitations in application are evaluated.
