Work is rewarding when we focus on improving customer value.
I am a leader able to articulate a project’s vision, value, risks, and constraints in the context of the
listener to accelerate the successful delivery of customer value. I am ingrained with the principals
and practices of Agile (Scrum) and Lean (Toyota Production System) through more than fifteen
years of successful project completions. My previous work as a software architect, SQL database
designer, software developer using Gupta Team Developer, and software-as-a-service (SAAS)
provider allows me to effectively communicate with technical team members across many
disciplines. My work experience applying Lean and Agile to a wide variety of projects
demonstrates that I am a quick and willing learner, can deal with all levels of management, and
can adapt to new environments and subject domains easily.
Professional Experience
Allergy Treatment Systems, Flower Mound, Texas 2012 to present
President
Allergy Treatment Systems is a company I co-founded that enables family practice physicians to
add immunotherapy allergy treatment to their practices. Our company provides Continuing
Medical Education (CME) credit training to the practice physicians and then we provide an
Internet based software system that automates most of the calculations related to allergy
treatment using immunotherapy. The software allows practices to record patient test results and
then automatically calculates individual custom compounding prescriptions for the patients. We
are integrated with compounding pharmacies so the orders can be filled and returned to the
practice for treatment. The practice then uses our software to document treatment history, and the
system automatically maintains manufacturer lot traceability for all treatments. As one of my core
strengths, I interfaced with the subject matter experts about allergy, and led the technical team to
translate those requirements into a functioning system.
The software development is now completed and the company will be switching its activities from
primarily software development to marketing.
The software was developed in 35 weeks using Scrum methodology on a one-week Scrum cycle.
The project consumed 4,300 development hours by three programmers. There are 114,600 lines
of code, 5,213 window objects, and 13,710 functions in the system. Our development speed of
4,681 lines of code per programmer month is 3.6 times above industry benchmarks because of
the high amount of code we were able to re-use from the object libraries that were developed by
Power Chord Systems.
Power Chord Systems, Plano, Texas 1987 to present
President
Power Chord Systems is a business-process improvement company that enables change through
the development of custom software to support the re-design of company processes.
Projects Include:
• Workflow management (work order system), asset tracking, and activity based cost
reporting for the entire Public Works Department for the City of McKinney, Texas. The
public works department employs about 200 workers and has an annual budget of over
$86,000,000.
• Workflow management (work order system), asset tracking, maintenance management,
production management, inventory and labor tracking, and cost reporting for the Dolet Hills
Brian Bulaw, Project Management Professional
Mining Venture. (A coal mine owned by American Electric Power that produces 3,900,000
tons of coal per year) (at $60/ton spot price = $234,000,000 annual revenue)
• Consulting work with the now vice-president of mining operations for Luminant to assist in
conversion from a public utility business model to a for-profit business model using lean
principals. I was chosen as a conversion team leader, and was the only outside consultant
on the team. I was chosen for the team because of other presentations I had made to top
leadership at Texas Utilities.
• Consulting work for General Motors to run a design of experiments to optimize the welding
parameters for the then-new aluminum tailgate of the Suburban so variation in welding
conditions would cause the minimum variation in weld quality.
• Developed a computerized data collection system for General Motors to optimize spot
welding parameters for steel body panels at the Indianapolis Truck and Bus plant.
• Developed an automated Dragline Performance Monitoring system for the Texas Utilities
Winfield North coal mine that collected data from a network interface to the programmable
logic controller (PLC) responsible for machine control.
• Developed a custom clinical laboratory information system (LIS) for Allercare Laboratories,
a national in-vitro testing laboratory. We provided custom reporting and automated data
interfaces to their Hycor test equipment.
• Developed a workflow management (work order system), asset tracking, maintenance
management, production management, dragline performance measurement, and cost
reporting for the Sandow coal mine in Rockdale, Texas. The mine was owned by Alcoa
and is now owned by Luminant. The payroll payment process computer program we
developed for Alcoa’s Sandow mine held the record as the most reliable IT process within
the entire Alcoa system.
• Developed a manufacturing production management system for a 90 employee contract
high-volume welding and heat-treating company in Chicago, Illinois. Provided consulting
during a relocation to design the plant layout to support lean manufacturing. Led a project
to implement a company-wide ISO 9001 quality management system that achieved
external certification. Provided process consulting and computer system customization to
reduce the amount of administrative effort while at the same time meeting the ISO 9001
requirements.
