Selected Mechanical Engineering Courses and Projects
Mechanical Design, Solids & Materials Laboratory, Fluids Laboratory, Heat Transfer, Heat & Power Applications, Linear Systems &
Control, Fluid Dynamics, Computational Methods, Material Science, Thermodynamics, Computer Aided Drawing, Circuits and
Microcontrollers, Welding and Metal Fabrication
• Senior Design Project: Worked with three other engineering students to design a soil heating system for the Wegmans
supermarket test farm. Design work was done in Pro-Engineer, with thermal analysis completed in PATRAN/NASTRAN. The
final design stored daytime heat underground by forcing warm air through underground ductwork. A supplementary nighttime
covering system was also developed to maximize efficiency. The final design was presented to the course instructor, as well as a
team of Wegmans Engineers.
• Solids Laboratory Project: Designed and constructed an optical mount using Pro/E and PATRAN that applied a varying point
force on 50 mm bk7 flats. An actuator was used to uniformly deform an optic. The deformation was measured with MetroPro
software using a Zygo Interferometer. Effects such as Trefoil, and possible stress polishing applications were detailed and
reported in the final report and presentation.
• Bridge Design Project: Worked with two other students to design and optimize a model bridge using NASTRAN and
PATRAN. Design was optimized for greatest strength to weight ratio, given size and load constraints. Our group used the
boundary conditions to design the winning structure, with strength to weight ratio of over 10,000.
• Wind Turbine Design: As one of a three person team, designed, constructed and tested a vertical axis wind turbine to optimize
efficiency for deep sea application. Blade number, angle of airfoil incidence, and blade arrangement were varied and tested on a
small scale in a wind tunnel. Design work was completed in Pro/E, while test data was acquired and analyzed using LabView.
By analyzing blade position and output voltage, we were able to determine the most efficient configuration of the turbine.
Results were documented in a technical report and presented to a group of peers and professors.
