To Whom It May Concern:
It is without refute that CAL is the leading public university in America today, yesterday,
and tomorrow. Its cultural significance is legendary. Growing up in Vallejo in the
1960’s, I experienced the social change that erupted on the steps of Sproul Hall firsthand.
Married to a die-hard CAL football fan and multi-generational season ticket holder, I am
aware of and concerned about the graduation rate of student-athletes, most notably the
football recruits. While the dream of an NFL career may be the focus of many student-
athletes, it is a long shot at best. Leaving with a degree from CAL, however, ensures
future prosperity.
With conviction I know I can make a difference in the academic success, earning a
bachelor’s degree, of these student-athletes, many requiring a more personalized
approach. Working in special education for many years, I have developed an arsenal of
techniques and strategies to differentiate instruction and to motivate the most reluctant
learner. Additionally, I understand the importance of a reliable, dependable,
approachable adult in the students-athletes’ overall character development. I believe this
is my finest attribute…the ability to inspire, to encourage, and to achieve what may seem
to be the impossible. One of my principals (a former school psychologist) put it this way:
“You know, Ruth, what you are is the quintessential Mom: strong, no-nonsense, loving
with a passion to help kids be the best they can be.” I concur.
I meet the basic requirements of this position: MA in psychology; teaching certificates in
standard secondary teaching, English, learning handicapped, resource specialist, all
issued for life; years of experience working with at-risk and special education students
across all categories; practical application of learning theory; affective domain
competence. More importantly, however, are the intangibles: an unwavering belief that
all kids can learn, that all kids require compassion and understanding, that all kids need
guidance. These intangibles are my strength.
I offer these student-athletes much more that technical competence. I offer a passion, a
wisdom, a certainty that all is possible and the tenacity to find a way to make it so.
Sincerely,
Ruth Antonini
