Skills
. Rigging metal components for transport, repositioning, securing, and
fitting
. Cut & bevel metal parts to ensure a tight fit
. Lay out, position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units
using jigs, welding torches, scribe, and hand tools
. Follow blueprints, templates, and layout specifications
. Verify work piece specification conformance using squares, rulers, and
measuring tapes
. Tack weld fitted parts, clips, and brackets in place prior to
permanent welding
. Lay out & examine metal stock or work pieces to be processed ensuring
specifications are met
. Align & fit parts per specifications using jacks, turnbuckles, clips
wedges, drift pins, pry bars, mauls, and hammers
. Locate & mark reference bending & cutting lines, such as, center,
buttock, and frame lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and
welding shrinkage, and other component specifications
. Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, and bolt straps to
bolt parts in position for welding or riveting
. Study engineering drawings & blueprints to determine material
requirements & task sequences
. Set up & operate fabricating machines, such as, brakes, rolls, shears,
flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses to bend, cut, form, punch,
drill, or otherwise form & assemble metal components
. Mark hole locations for drilling and install temporary fasteners to
bind parts in place for welding or riveting
. Prepare molds & templates for nonstandard part fabrication
. Install packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories &
members, such as, doors, hatches, brackets, clips, and bulkhead I
beams and other structural support stiffeners
