AUTOMOBILE CLUTCHLESS TRANSMISSION WITH EPPICYCLIC GEARBOX

WORKING:

This is a purely mechanical system in which an epicyclic

gear set do the all necessary function.

In an epicyclic system, when we lock any of the sun gear,

planet carrier or ring gear, we can transfer torque between the

other two at varying gear ratios.

Consider a planetary system in which the ring gear is

locked. When the engine provide torque to the sun gear in the anti

clockwise direction, due this torque the planet gears rotates in

the clock wise direction. But the planet gears cannot transmit the

torque to the ring gear as it is locked. So in order to transmit

the torque the planet gears tend to move along the ring gear teeth

thus rotating the carrier. The output from the carrier is connected

to the input of gear box thus providing the torque to the wheels.

For cutting the engine torque consider that the carrier

is locked. The torque from engine is provided to the sun gear in

anti clockwise direction, and thus the planets rotate in the

clockwise direction.

Since the ring gear is free from braking the torque is

transferred to the ring gear which freely rotates as no output is

taken from it. Thus the engine torque is compromised. Since we are

replacing the clutch with planetary system. The clutch pedal of

vehicle is no longer necessary, we need only brake pedal and

accelerator pedal for running the vehicle. Thus this system will

work as a semi-automatic clutch.

While pressing the accelerator pedal the 3/2 dc valve

direct the brake fluid to the ring gear brake band. And at the same

time the dc valve will release brake of planet carrier, thus

rotates the carrier for the torque transmission. When we are

braking or releasing the accelerator pedal the reverse of this

process will take place. And make the ring to rotate freely to

compromise the torque.

There are two hydraulic switches provided below the

accelerator pedal in which one is linked with the brake pedal fluid

line. This switch will activate only when the accelerator pedal is

released. This is given so because for shifting the manual gears

and for working the retarder we need to cut down the torque when

accelerator pedal is released. So while driving for shifting the

gears just release the accelerator pedal and shift the gear. This

will function like clutch.
