WORK EXPERIENCE
Youth Care Specialist
CYFD - State of New Mexico - Las Cruces, NM - August 2011 to Present
Responsibilities
Supervise the safety and security of one of four secure units at John Paul Taylor Center, a secure facility
for juveniles. I specialize in the rehabilitative aspects of the program, but also conduct room searches daily,
redirect aggressive or violent behaviors and restraint juveniles when necessary. Conduct UA's on juveniles
to check for drug use/possession and bag and tag contraband and follow chain of custody. I also conduct
transports of inmates.
Accomplishments
I have achieved to-date a one hundred person success rate of inmates (called clients) that I have been assigned
as official mentor to. In the general the facility success rate is approx. 10 - 20%. In three years while involved
in countless restraints for various reasons, I have not injured, or been injured by a client.
I started an evening group that taught life skills to clients ready to leave which helped them not return to lock up.
Skills Used
Astute observation of human behavior; intuition; thinking out of box to get clients to assume responsibility
for their actions; conducted myself always in a firm, fair and consistent professional manner; exercised great
patience and persistence in talking down suicidal and hostile/dangerous clients; maintained accurate records;
reported important safety information or conduct by clients that warranted close observation or intervention
or unit lock down; continual awareness of safety and security; reporting deficiencies in equipment/facility for
repair/replacemnt.
