ACADEMIC PROJECTS AND
SEMINARS UNDERTAKEN:
Description: Surface grinding is the most common of the grinding operations. The
surface grinder is composed of an abrasive wheel, a work holding device known as
chuck and a reciprocating or rotary table. The chuck holds the material in pl ace while it
is being worked on. It can do this one of two ways: ferromagnetic pieces are held in
place by a magnetic chuck, while non-ferromagnetic and non-metallic pieces
(aluminium, brass or some hard plastics) are held in place by vacuum or mechanical
means. A machine (made from ferromagnetic steel or cast iron) placed on the
magnetic chuck can be used to hold non-ferromagnetic work pieces if only a magnetic
chuck is available. The vice is made at high precision, hence 90 degree works can be
done in this vice. It can also be used to grind tools of different cross sections. It can
be also used for other types of machining operations like milling. The objective of the
project work is to design and fabricate a machine vice which is cost effective, simple
design and high precision.
Industrial Seminar: A study of the various plants in Kerala Metals And Minerals
Ltd(KMML),Kollam.
Description: KMML is the world’s first fully integrated titanium dioxide plant. Titanium
dioxide is white and has high refractive index, thermally stable, non flammable and
non toxic.Titanium Dioxide is used in cosmetics, paints, papers, sunscreens, etc.
Various plants such as Ilumenite beneficiation plant(IBP),Chlorination plant, Oxidation
plant, Treatment plant and Acid Regeneration Plant(ARP) have been studied and
presented.
Seminar: Case study on Tidal Stream Turbines.
Description: Tides and tidal currents are generated by the gravitational forces of the
sun and moon on the earth’s waters. Tidal stream turbines are often described as
underwater windmills. They are driven by the kinetic energy of moving water in a
similar way that wind turbines use moving air. The generator is placed into a marine
current that typically results when water being moved by tidal forces arises on the
ocean bed. There are sufficient numbers of such fast-flowing underwater currents
around the world to make this form of marine renewable energy worth pursuing.
