Work History:
Thomas Jefferson University Hospital; staff/charge nurse
While at TJUH, I worked as a staff/charge nurse on the Maternal Infant
Care Unit.
I worked the 12 hour night shift caring for newly delivered mothers and
their infants. While charge nurse, I was responsible for LPN's, room
assignments, chart checks as well as admissions and discharges on the unit.
Also assisted in GERALDINE COLE MSN CRNP
writing new care plans for the infants who were boarder babies in the
nursery recovering from drug addictions or infections.
Broomall Presbyterian Nursing Home; head nurse-skilled floor
While at the nursing home, I was charge nurse in the Skilled Nursing
Floor of a 42 bed facility. Duties included overseeing 13 nursing
assistants, 2 LPN's and performing routine care to chronically ill
geriatric residents, rounding with the physicians on a daily basis,
completing the geriatric residents MDS ( Minimum Data Sheet- a mandate
from the Ombudsmen Act) & performing yearly evaluations on the nursing
assistant staff. While at the nursing home, I held "Payday Chats" for
the nursing assistant staff to enhance a cohesive environment for them to
work as well as having them realize that they are appreciated for the hard
work they did on a skilled floor with residents needing total care.
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM)
Utilization review department at PCOM. In charge of the admissions
from
nursing homes certifying that their admissions to PCOM were hospital level
care. Also served on the discharge planning committee. Nursing home
residents lose their place in their facility once admitted to the hospital
and it was imperative that they be placed back into their residential
facility once they were no longer hospital level care. By coordinating
information with occupational & physical therapies and social workers, the
length of stay was reduced to a minimum for these geriatric patients.
1993-2009 Swarthmore College Health Services; nurse practitioner/travel
consultant
Swarthmore College has a 24 hour in patient infirmary for its college
aged students. While at Swarthmore College, I worked 12 hour night shifts
and cared for any in-patients as well as office hour appointments for the
students needing care. I also consulted the students who were accepted to
the study abroad program. That involved reviewing information from the CDC
in regard to where the student would be traveling. A review of the
students' health status as well as vaccination records is imperative since
most of the students do need additional vaccinations to keep them safe and
healthy during their semester abroad. I ordered and administered any
vaccines & medications that were recommended by the CDC.
2007-present Minute Clinic; nurse practitioner
Retail Clinics are now a concept that has begun as a solution to
expensive health care. Being able to treat a variety of illnesses
(sinusitis, pharyngitis, UTI's, bronchitis to name a few) in a walk- in
clinic alleviates the burden on the Emergency Department as well as allows
patients access to another facility if they cannot get an appointment with
their Primary Care Practitioner. We are a cost effective solution to common
episodic GERALDINE COLE MSN CRNP
illnesses seen in the primary care setting. While at the Minute Clinic, I
follow ISCI guidelines and enter the data on an EMR as well as e-prescribe
medications (when appropriate) to patients 18 months & older. I also serve
as a preceptor to Nurse Practitioner students who are rotating through
their family practice curricula.
While opening these retail clinics inside CVS, I helped launch this new
concept by marketing our idea and mission to the public eye through direct
contacts, visiting facilities, and mailings. Because of this, the Minute
Clinic market in the Philadelphia region has become a staple facility to
our community for acute episodic illnesses, physical exams in adjunct to
Primary Care Practitioners who are not available to their patients after
office hours or on weekends. This ability to receive excellent care when
illnesses occur results in great satisfaction to our patients who then
refer more of their friends and family to a Minute Clinic.
