Industrial Training

A Training Project at IOCL - Guwahati Oil Refinery from June 2013 to

July 2013.

It was 1 month training where we have studied and explored the various

units of IOCL and also experienced a glimpse of the practical engineering

life.

It was the first real industrial experience and came to know how the

different units of a big Thermal Power Station work.During the training

period it was seen how the different parts of boiler, turbine, condenser,

compressor works. Also there were many departmental units like Fire and

Safety departments, Mechanical Workshop and Maintainance Planning, Rotary

Section ie how a pump works,Valve section, Machine Section etc.,also it

was seen the main working procedure of a "Rankine Cycls".

Projects

Effect of process parameters on optimum cutting force in orthogonal

turning operation.

Under the guidance of Ms. Subhajit Das, Department of Mechanical

Engineering,GIMT

It is a 1 year project based on Effect of the various process parameters on

optimisation of cutting

forces by using orthogonal turning operation.

ABSTRACT : Now-a-days increasing the productivity and the quality of

the machined parts are the main challenges of metal cutting industry.

Higher output with minimisation of crucial factors like power, cost, time,

labour is desired by every industry. Power requirement would be minimum if

cutting force is minimum..

In this experiment, attempt has been taken to get an optimization of

cutting force in orthogonal turning operation by the effects of machining

parameters viz. cutting tool, speed, feed and depth of cut. Taguchi method

of design of experiments is applied for optimization. Automatic lathe

machine is used along with mild steel and high speed steel as work piece

and cutting tool material respectively.

The investigated process parameters are cutting tool (HSS+ve rake, HSS zero

rake, HSS-ve rake and tungsten carbide), speed (60,140,360,530 rpm), feed

(0.05, 0.105, 0.154, 0.210 mm/rev), depth of cut (1, 1.5, 1.7, 2 mm).

Experimentation was conducted as per Taguchi's orthogonal array. Four

cutting parameters with four levels are arranged in L16 orthogonal array.

The optimal conditions have been achieved using the overall evaluation

criteria ( OEC) to get the better cutting force, power requirement,

temperature and surface roughness. The optimal combination of process

parameters for weightage of 50 % both cutting force and temperature are

cutting tool HSS-ve, feed 0.05mm/rev, depth of cut 1mm and the temperature

rise 329K, cutting force 7.068N, power 0.5417W and roughness value

0.078126 m. For both 50% cutting force and power optimal combination of

process parameters are cutting tool HSS-ve, speed 60 rpm, feed 0.05 mm/rev,

depth of cut 1mm and the temperature rise 329K, force 7.068N, power 0.5417

and roughness value 0.078125 m. For 50% cutting force and 50% surface

roughness optimal combination of process parameters are cutting tool HSS-

ve, speed 360rpm, feed 0.05 mm/rev, depth of cut 1mm and the temperature

rise 354K, cutting force 6.572N, roughness 0.07812 m and power 2.8827W.For

each 25% cutting force, temperature, roughness optimal combination of

process parameters are cutting tool tungsten carbide, speed 60 rpm, feed

0.05mm/rev, depth of cut 1 mm and the temperature rise is 317K, power

0.4192W, force 6.944, roughness 0.0651 m.

In addition, attempts were made in the detailed experimentation to analyze

the effects of major contributors, which are spindle speed has highest

contribution and depth of cut has lowest contribution in temperature rise.

On the other hand, depth of cut and tool geometry has highest and lowest

contribution respectively to the cutting force. Similarly, spindle speed

and feed has highest and lowest contribution to power. It is seen that feed

has lesser effect on surface roughness than depth of cut

Other Trainings

Robotics -Robosapiens India.

It was a short term robotics training basically dealing with

mechanism and programming of micro - controller based robots.

North East Frontire Railway - Bamunimaidan Guwahati 781021,Assam

It was 1 month training at diesel shed, new Guwahati, frontier

railway under diesel traction training centre.

During the training period it was seen how the different parts of

a train works.Traction motor is the main driving motor for the initial

running of a train ie seen during the period of training. Also seen how a 16

cylinder V Shaped Engine works during running condition. Also seen the

different parts like radiator,Carburator, Flywheel, Gear Case, Brake etc .

Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) -Guwahati Assam

It was 1 month training at ASTC workshop.

During the traing period it wass seen the different parts of a

transport. Also it was seen how the 6 cylinder engine works and the

different parts of engine like piston, cylinder, atomizer, fuel pump, fuel

tank etc.

Autocad - under computer educational centre ( CEC )

It was 2 months course as under CEC centre

During the training period i have designed the 2-D and 3-D view of the

different machine parts under the guidance of respective sir.
