SUMMARY:
Proven track record building development teams and leading delivery of original software products.
Expertise in highly scalable Web applications, distributed computing and SaaS infrastructures,
application performance management, business intelligence and database technologies.
Ability to effectively communicate technology benefits to customers, convey business requirements
to project teams, and collaborate with executive staff to devise innovative product strategies.
EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE:
KNODE, Boston, MA
Vice President, Engineering 2011 – Present
Co-founded seed stage startup working with PureTech Ventures. Recruited initial product team and
developed product strategy. Through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies (e.g., AstraZeneca)
plus leading academic advisors, initially targeted biomedical R&D vertical with new graph-based search
platform. The system automatically generates and ranks expertise profiles of top scientists within and
across institutions via unique machine learning algorithms and “big data” processing techniques:
KNODE Search, a Cloud knowledge base encompassing millions of academic and industry experts,
plus their scientific content – publications, patents, grants, clinical trials, etc. Identify experts, opinion
leaders, emerging researchers, business prospects, collaborators through a SaaS-based interface or
lightweight Web APIs and UI widgets. Early adopters in technology licensing, alliance management,
economic development, and other areas where professional network connections are vital.
DESKTONE, Chelmsford, MA – acquired by VMware
Chief Technology Officer 2010 – 2011
Vice President, Engineering 2007 – 2010
Founded and staffed development group after Series A funding of startup that delivers Cloud-hosted
virtual desktops as an outsourced subscription service. The Desktone Cloud platform offers tenants
self-service administration and enables rapid provisioning of large populations of dedicated or shared
desktops for end-users, without the upfront costs and complexity of traditional desktop virtualization:
Service Grid, constructed at large scale to span multiple data centers across multiple geographies, in
high availability configuration. Licensing costs are minimized through extensive use of Open Source
components. Platform is multi-tenant, allowing for shared infrastructure. Underlying hypervisors and
storage are managed to improve resource utilization and service economics.
Access Fabric, transforms notion of centralized connection broker into a distributed network service.
User connection requests are routed based on entitlements across Desktops as a Service® hybrid
Cloud deployments, transparent to target host server or geography, at global scale. Supports multiple
display protocols and variety of access end-points, from browsers to thin clients to mobile tablets.
Early focus on recruiting Service Providers resulted in major partnership with IBM, which offers their
Smart Business Desktop Cloud world-wide based on the Desktone software platform. Also helped to
close strategic investment from Alcatel-Lucent.
OPNET TECHNOLOGIES, Nashua, NH
ALTAWORKS – acquired by OPNET
Vice President, Engineering 2001 – 2006
Recruited into network and systems management startup to stabilize first product release and focus
ongoing development on customer requirements:
Panorama, a performance monitoring solution for complex J2EE application server environments
(e.g., BEA WebLogic, IBM WebSphere). Instruments business logic, Web server, and database tiers,
consolidates data, then employs patented analysis techniques to establish dynamic performance
thresholds, correlate metrics and events, and determine probable cause of system bottlenecks.

Commander, an availability and user-centric response monitor that reports status of infrastructure
and applications based on business service level model. Re-vamped product after asset purchase.
Worked with board and investment banker through Altaworks acquisition process, due diligence, etc.
Managed integration of product group and business into OPNET. Later, expanded NH R&D center via
technology licensing and new development to add products to application performance suite:
LoadScaler (3rd party buy-in) workload generator used for scalability measurements of Web applications.
QUICKBUY, Acton, MA
Vice President, Engineering 1999 – 2000
Joined startup on first round of venture funding to establish Engineering and Network Operations
functions to support unique approach to Web distributed e-commerce. Guided move of technology from
prototype to production Internet service offering:
“Buyable icons”, a patented method for creating and using media files enhanced with necessary
information to effect purchase transactions. These objects can be delivered to consumers via Web
pages, as well as e-mail, instant messages, streamed audio or video.
Direct e-commerce network, the secure infrastructure to submit orders from varying points-of-sale to
remote order management systems (e.g., Open Market Transact, Microsoft Site Server).
RED BRICK SYSTEMS, Andover, MA
ENGAGE TECHNOLOGIES – business purchased by Red Brick
Director, Product Development 1996 – 1998
Sixth employee at CMGI-funded startup providing solutions that enable companies to interact with
prospects and customers in personalized marketing, sales and service relationships via the Internet.
Built team (engineering, QA, documentation) and drove complex product from early concept to customer pilots:
Fusion, an ETL tool to automate construction of very large data warehouses (Oracle, Informix, SQL Server).
Graphical approach reduces design time and process complexity. Data integration server employs
high performance, highly scalable, parallel data flow transformation techniques on Unix or Windows.
Charged with out-placing several products. Worked with investment banker to offer technology and
manage due diligence process. Transitioned development team through Red Brick acquisition to deliver
companion products to high performance data warehouse DBMS.
INDEPENDENT CONSULTING: 2001 – Present
Fulfilled interim executive, technical advisor and assessment roles at early-stage companies, such as:
Steeplechase Networks – Refined product strategy and architecture for community-based wireless
broadband network platform to enable delivery of value-added services and content to subscribers.
AlgoMagic Technologies – Pre-funding company affiliated with Brown and Johns Hopkins
Universities, developing novel approach to network security services and storage of credentials for
very large-scale distributed applications. Formulated commercial product plans.
FireStar Software – Guided core development team to help spin-out business, reposition, and
repackage ObjectSpark XML–object–data mapping facility. Uses patented methods to generate data
and messaging services layer of multi-tier COM or Java applications.
WebABLE – Devised technology plan for new packaged solutions for leading provider of consulting
services to ensure that Web sites are accessible by people with disabilities.
