Topic: Numerical Study of Self-Field MPD Thrusters
International conference on Theoretical, Applied, Experimental and
Computational Mechanics, December 27-30, 2011, IIT Kharagpur, India
Paper: Numerical Study of Self-Field MPD Thrusters
ABSTRACT: A finite volume code for solving two-dimensional, axisymmetric,
inviscid, compressible, Magneto-hydrodynamic flow is developed to study the
flow field in self-field Magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) Thrusters. The induced
magnetic flux density in the plasma caused by the applied current is
obtained from the solution of Maxwell's equation, which gives rise to
electric fields and currents in the plasma. Lorentz force and Joule heating
caused by the interaction of induced magnetic field, electric field and
current act as source terms in momentum and energy equations of the
unsteady Euler equation respectively.
The solver is validated by comparing the results obtained with available
experimental and numerical results of a simplified straight cylindrical
thruster with coaxial electrodes. A study on the effect of variation in
electrode length and position is carried out to understand flow and field
interactions, which would yield a better performance for the thruster
chosen.

Work Details
- Benchmarking on various CAE and CFD requirements for Clients. Benchmarks
1. CAE analysis on a Silo for a Client
Analysis Part:
Preprocessing in Altair HyperMesh
Geometry Cleanup of the Model
Midsurface Generation
2-d Meshing, Quality check to ensure a Quality mesh for better Results
Organizing the elements and Surfaces
Creating Bolt and weld Connections Applying Loads and Creating Load Steps
Solved in Altair RADIOSS
Linear Static Analysis
Post-Processing in Altair HyperView
Contour plots for Stresses and Displacements
Creating Complete Report on the Project
2. CFD analysis on a Axial Fan for a Client
Analysis Part
A complete CFD analysis on the model.
Axial Fan is placed in an wind tunnel is simulated to check for the
efficiency of the fan. Different profile of fans was studied to check for
the required efficiency
Software Used: Autodesk Simulation CFD(Previously known as CF Design)
3. CAE Analysis on Silencer Muffler
One Step Analysis was done to check for the formability, Blank shape, and
Nesting of the Blank.
Incremental analysis was done to Simulate the whole process and to optimize
for the Blank Size and material Saving
Software Used:
Preprocessor: Altair HyperForm
Solver : Altair Radioss
Postprocessor: Altair HyperView
4. CFD Simulation for Electrostatic Precipitator
Flow Simulation in a chamber to ensure a uniform laminar flow over the
ESP(electrostatic Precipitator).
ESP being a device to remove the dust particles from the fluid (Gas). So
for an Efficient ESP it is necessary to ensure a laminar and uniform flow
on ESP, so Grids or Mesh are placed before ESP to have a uniform Flow on
it.
So simulation was done on different designs of Grids and mesh to ensure
laminar Flow.
Software Used: Autodesk Simulation CFD (Previously Known as CF Design)
5. Conducted Exclusive Training on Altair Hypermesh, Radioss and HyperView
at MNIT Jaipur
Modules Covered:
Hpermesh: Geometry Cleanup, Meshing (1d,2d,3d), Editing Mesh, Fixing Failed
elements, Set up for Linear static, Modal and Buckling Analysis
Hyperview: visualizing the results, animating the results
7. Linear Dynamic Analysis for a Client
Analysis: Linear Dynamic Analysis on a Tractor Component
Software: Autodesk Simulation Mechanical.
