Project Title: Comparative study on performance and emission
characteristics of a SI engine fuelled with Gasoline, Hydrogen, CNG and
Hythane.
Jan-May 2013
Description:
In concern with the current renewable energy crisis, development in the
field of alternative fuels is of utmost importance. This work investigates
and compares the performance and emission characteristics of an SI engines
with various fuels namely gasoline, CNG, Hydrogen and Hythane. The present
project examines and evaluates the benefits of the use of a relatively new
fuel, Hythane. Hythane is a blend of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) and
Hydrogen in varied proportions.Experiments were performed on a four stroke,
single cylinder S.I engine (Briggs and Stratton). The engine is coupled
with an eddy current dynamometer. The fuels are then compared on the whole
and the most efficient fuel is identified. From this investigation, it can
be seen that, the use of CNG, Hydrogen and Hythane will help decrease the
overall Hydrocarbon and Carbon Monoxide emissions. Though the NOx emissions
increase in the case of Hythane, they show a decreasing trend in CNG while
Hydrogen as a fuel does not lead to any Nox emissions. Various performance
and emission characteristic graphs are plotted comparing the various cases
of fuelling.
