Profile
Five years’ experience in the Ghanaian Mining Industry mainly with Anglogold Ashanti, (formerly Ashanti
Goldfields Limited), Obuasi. Worked through the ranks to become a senior Geotechnical engineer
(Technical) at the South Mine section of the Obuasi Mine. Within these five years, I have had stints with the
Backfill department where our main type of fill is Hydraulic cyclone fill with and without cement, the database
and instrumentation management section of the department as well as work with development contractors
on major declines at the mine. I am in charge of three senior staff and four junior staff Technical team.
Acquired good management capabilities, communicational and interpersonal skills.
I am proficient in the design of underground excavations – Open stoping – Longitudinal and
transverse (designing based primarily on the stability numbers and calculated Hydraulic radii for
stope walls)
Sequencing of stopes also primarily based on schedule of filling of stopes
Planning and scheduling for instrument installation in stopes for monitoring crown and hanging walls
Preparation of Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) in underground
Risk assessment and ICAM investigations
Mapping, Testing and Monitoring, data collection, storage and analysis
Design and Monitoring (QA/QC) of Reinforcement and Shotcreting
Backfill (Hydraulic fill) QA/QC
Laboratory testing for rock parameters (intact and rock mass), cement grout for cable bolts and
backfill bulkhead bricks.
Major Achievements / Accomplishments
I was part of the successful designing of portal support and all the support standards of the
mechanised decline at the Obuasi mine and subsequently all mechanised developments on
the mine.
I was part of the Geotechnical team that designed the shotcrete sup port for the decline portals
and the monitoring processes –, slump test, early strength and final strength test.
I am in the fore-front of all training at the Geotechnical department for all newly employed
engineers and mine supervisors – this includes Sirovision mapping, scan line mapping,
database analysis and instrument installation and monitoring.
I was part of the Geotechnical team that undertook ground penetrating radar systems to
determine the size and shape of voids under company housing in the village.
Required Experience
Experience in conventional and mechanized mining: I am experienced in conventional and trackless
(mechanised) mining in various types of stoping methods in different rock types for gold. I have experience
in Open stoping and Sublevel Caving.
Underground experience: I have spent the last five years of my life underground, going through the basic
systems of ventilation, backfilling, geology and production drilling but the chunk of my time has been with
the Backfill and Geotechnical departments. In summary, I have quite an appreciable underground
experience which will add value to any organisation.
Ability to achieve targets in respect of safety, production and costs: Mining is all about achieving
targets safely at the minimum cost. I have a comprehensive way of achieving targets by good planning
which involves all the stakeholders (ventilation, engineering, and other support services). At such planning
meetings, every element of all projects is identified and the possible issues are brought up. These are then
addressed in a timely manner so that the project could be executed on time.
When it comes to safety, one cannot assign a cost element to it. I believe in being very proactive and
ensuring that whatever it takes to ensure that all workings are safe for the worker are in place. That way
every person comes to work and go home to see the family without any injury or harm. In actual fact no one
wants to work at a place full of incidents or accidents. It is on record that any accident impacts negatively
on the company in the eyes of the public and other stakeholders.
