PROJECT SUMMARY
Title : Ultrasonic Gesture Technology
Description : The main objective of our project was to achieve human
computer interaction and device control using hand gesture by ultrasound
Doppler Effect. Vision based gesture recognition techniques are generally
brittle (e.g., sensitive to lighting conditions) and require quite a bit of
processing power. As an alternative, sonic gesture sensing has been shown
to be a reliable tool for sensing a variety of in-air gestures for
controlling interface this design works as follows. Firstly sound is
produced by feeding a periodic square wave through an ultrasonic
transmitter which generates a frequency of 40kz that is above the audible
range of humans. Whenever the user moves his hands, these sound waves which
are generated from the ultrasonic transmitter gets reflected back and the
module picks up its echo, it measures the time elapsed between the two
events and outputs a waveform whose high time is modulated by the measured
time which is proportional to the distance. By analyzing five to six
samples of the echo signals received if the distance obtained starts
decreasing then controller identifies that the hand is moving towards the
source, if the distance starts increasing then the controller identifies
that the hand is moving away from the source. Based on the action performed
by the user the programmed operation can be shown real time on a laptop
using a visual studio application running in the laptop.
