CAREER HISTORY
2008 European Patent Office
Patent Grant Authority
PATENT EXAMINER
-Present The Hague
As Patent Examiner my role is to analyze patent applications in the field of mechatronics, EMS engine
control systems and starter and ignition systems . Each patent application must be examined to
establish an initial opinion regarding its clarity, novelty, inventiveness, and patentability.
In order to assess novelty and inventiveness, the application must be compared to the current state of
the art body of public knowledge. As a patent examiner I must constantly perform extensive searches of
the state of the art. Through the results of that search, I must provide a qualified opinion on the
patentability of the application.
This opinion, and the final decision to grant - or not to grant - a patent, requires a high level of
expertise and technical proficiency. Often, not all the necessary information is readily available, so a
deep knowledge of engines and electronics is required. The capacity to make complex decisions, and
to clearly communicate their grounding to the applicant and her attorney is also paramount.
In carrying out my varied duties at the European Patent Office, I employ my technical expertise to assist
the Engine Control team develop and evolve the examination instruments, as well as the classification
scheme of the patent library. The scheme defers intimately to the technical nature of the field, and
therefore its development and evolution calls for a deep and comprehensive knowledge base.
2002-2008 Renault SAS
Car manufacturing
ENGINE CONTROL DEVELOPMENT ENGINEER
Valladolid, Spain
Responsible for EMS calibration and the final programming of several ECUs for petrol engine cars in the
new Renault range.
Designed, supervised and conducted tests on the engines of prototype vehicles in order to properly
calibrate an ECU. These test campaigns were designed to discover the optimal values and settings for the
generic software application - running in the ECU – for each particular model of car. These tests may be
engine tests performed in fixed engine test facilities; systems tests for elements such as catalyzers or ESP’s;
or complete car tests performed on prototypes: either in a testing track, in testing sites with hard
environmental conditions, or in fleets of prototypes during long trips on open roads.
Processed, analyzed, and used test results to determine the optimal settings for the ECU and to establish
the correct programs for further tests. A particular set of parameters was identified to achieve high
performance, low consumption, low emissions, and high reliability, in the new vehicles.
Programmed the ECUs in several projects. In particular, I worked on several midsize petrol engines (1.4, 1.6
and 2.0l.) for the launch of new cars like the Megane II, Scenic II, Modus, Clio III, Laguna II, Logan and the
Sandero. I was responsible for determining the ECU settings, which impacted on performance, drivability,
emissions, and also for the onboard diagnostics.
Carried out extensive work in the adaptation and validation of new components for vehicles that had
already been released into the market. The new components often had potential impacts on the ECU. Their
introduction often required a new series of tests, to determine whether new optimized ECU calibration
values were required to be established.
Performed a support role for problem diagnosis in testing facilities in other areas of the company. Support
was provided to factory engine test benches and to quality department testing facilities across different sites
in France, Spain and Romania.
Regularly contributed new ideas to the development of elements of the generic software that runs in the
ECU. These ideas were adopted and applied across the whole range of Renault petrol vehicles.
The work structure at Renault required constant coordination with other departments and teams from
different sites and nations. I successfully coordinated, provided support, negotiated, and communicated, in
an international environment.
This diverse array of roles deepened my knowledge not only in the core of my mechanical engineering field,
but also in other areas like robust software architecture, onboard electronics, multiplexed communication
networks and software design.

Institute RESEARCH ENGINEER
research
Madrid, Spain
Launched a research project to develop pedestrian protection systems for vehicles . The research aimed to
establish the most promising passive safety solutions, such as structural changes in car architecture, as well
as active safety systems, such as deployable airbags. The project also aimed to develop reliable testing
methodologies, which would provide consistent and accurate comparison.
Designed and tested prototypes, pedestrian dummies and sensor arrays. Participated in the preparation
and the analysis of several crash tests of various vehicles including buses and cars.
As an expert in crash testing, headed the Spanish delegation to the twenty-ninth session of the Working
Party on Passive Safety (GRSP) at the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations in Geneva,
Switzerland in May 2001. This Working Party works under the mandate of the Inland Transport Committee
of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in the development of a global set of
harmonized safety requirements for road vehicles. On behalf of this working party, I submitted proposals
for changes to the set of requirements regarding Reg. 14 (Safety belt anchorages), Reg. 17 (Strength of
seats) and Reg. 44 (Child restraints).
1995-2001 Psicotec SA
Human Resources Consulting
JUNIOR CONSULTING ENGINEER
Madrid
Working in the area of Quality Management and Total Quality, I participated in projects to assist various
companies to obtain ISO 9000, ISO 9004 and ISO 9001 certification. I also delivered training in Quality
Management and Quality Tools for these companies.
