• Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patients’ (both

mother and infant) care plans

• Maintains a comfortable, safe and clean environment for mother and infant

• Assists mother with her hygienic needs

• Assess fundus and checks for post partum bleeding

• Inspects cesarean-section incision (if applicable) – removal of staples upon discharge

• Assesses mother’s pain, if any

• Performs emotional status checks on mother, recognizing symptoms such as those related to post partum

depression

• Performs assessment for Intimate Partner Violence, drug abuse, and other psychosocial or physical needs that need

to be addressed. Coordinates care with Social Services, CPS, and community rescources

• Monitors bonding between mother, infant, and family

• Takes mother’s and infant’s vital signs

• Measures input/output of mother and infant

• Monitors mother and infant and reports adverse reactions to any treatments or medications being given

• Assists mother with breast-feeding along with Lactation Consultants

• Educates mother on infant safety: chocking, bath, bulb syringe, crib, falls, co-sleeping, suffocation, CPR, infant

security, handling, feeding

• Weighs infant and monitors percent wt loss to determine if orders need to be put into place for strict feeding

protocols

• Performs labs on infants via venipuncture and heel stick.

• Involves and educates family/significant others in implementing best practices for mother and infant care

• Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format

and on the appropriate forms
