June 2008 - present: MidAmerican Energy Company. Davenport and Muscatine, Iowa.

I am the Supervising Chemist at two coal-fired electric generating stations; the Riverside

Generating Station in Bettendorf, and the Louisa Generating Station in Muscatine. In addition, I

am the Environmental Coordinator at the Riverside station, and the Operator in Charge of Louisa

station’s public water supply.

Duties include:

Supervise lab technicians and an environmental coordinator.

Develop standard operating procedures and provide training.

Serve as project manager of construction, demolition, and repair work.

Ensure proper operation and maintenance of analytical equipment.

Monitor / maintain boiler water chemistry.

Perform inspections of boiler drum, turbine, condenser, hotwell, and deaerator.

Communicate directly with Iowa DNR and U.S. EPA.

Represent the company during compliance inspections.

Submit environmental reports to several government agencies.

I created and maintain our MSDS database.

Maintain SWPPP, SPCC, fugitive dust, emergency response, and water conservation plans.

Maintain opacity and emissions monitoring server data.

Schedule and track hazardous waste disposal.

1999 – June 2008: Q.C. Metallurgical Laboratory. Davenport, Iowa.

I was the lab manager at this environmental / metallurgical laboratory located in Davenport,

Iowa. This was the only lab in Iowa that was both state certified for environmental analysis

(Iowa lab #084) and A2LA accredited (certificate # 1238.01) for metallurgical testing.

Duties include:

Perform annual proficiency tests required by Iowa DNR for laboratory certification.

Routine analysis included metal alloy identification using optical emission spectroscopy for

larger steel samples, and flame-AAS for aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, zinc and small ferrous

samples not suited for EOS. Qualitative analysis of plastic and rubber samples FTIR. Soil and

waste water analysis for pH, ammonia, chlorine, chloride, fluoride, sulfate, nitrate, trace metals,

water hardness, oil/grease, TSS, TDS, TS, BOD, CBOD, DO, COD, hexavalent chromium,

phenols, cyanide, TCLP, paint filter, PCBs, BTEX, gasoline, diesel, and more.

I received samples from customers, performed the analysis, analyzed the data, generated the

reports, and discussed findings with customers. I handled most of the lab’s samples from start to

finish. I also supervised technicians I trained to perform routine analysis.

1989 – 1999: Rock Island Arsenal. Rock Island, Illinois.

I was a physical Scientist, GS-1301-12, in the Science and Engineering Directorate at the Rock

Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois.

Duties included:

Managed the Petroleum and Rubber Lab, the Coatings Lab, and the Corrosion Lab.

Surface coating analysis including plated, phosphated, anodized, and painted surfaces.

Analysis of plating bath solutions, and analysis of industrial wastes generated by the facility.

Mechanical testing including tensile, yield, elongation (TYE), hardness, impact resistance.

Mounting, polishing, and etching metallographic specimens.

Microstructure analysis including hardness surveys, carburization depths, plating thickness.

Supported foundry by analyzing cast iron, steel, and aluminum before and after pours.

Assisted in the Radiological Lab.

Assisted Environmental by developing their original Storm Water Management Plan.

I maintained two electron microscopes and used them for photographing fracture surfaces and

semi-quantitative material identification using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).

I became proficient at using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, ICP, UV-Visible

spectrophotometer, ECD/FID/PID gas chromatogram, FTIR, Ion chromatogram.
