PROFILE
Analyst and database developer with 25 years of experience in designing, building and analyzing datasets,
making and implementing recommendations and working closely with clients to make certain solutions meet
needs.
SKILLS
Programming and Software: SQL, VBA, R, SPSS, HTML, Access, Excel, Word, PPT, FrontPage, PL/I, Gimp.
Expert knowledge of insurance underwriting and pricing for PP&C Auto.
EXPERIENCE
Independent Consultant: San Francisco/Novato – 1998 to present
NASA PRO RACING: Designed and developed a web-based event sign-up and payment system using input
from web host. This resulted in accurate and faster credit card processing and verifiable track event sign-ups.
Designed and developed membership and event processing software that handled most aspects of auto racing
event planning. Access was used for the front end, database processing and data formatting. Output consisted
of grid reports, sign-up lists, number assignments and wrist band printing. All processing could be completed
just before the event with better organization and completeness than had occurred prior.
FIBERSTARS: Designed and built a warranty tracking database that integrated claim files with product
information and allowed the client to quickly identify product defects. Claim files were cleaned in Excel and
Access, formatted through a series of macros, then imported into the product database. A GUI analysis screen
was used to review various reports and to identify high failure rates. This work enabled the client to make
production changes more quickly and lower the rate of returns due to product failure.
TradeInteriors.com: Designed and built customer service software using GUI, database and integrating with
sales and product data from the website database. The PC based interface was linked via SQL Server to the
client and enabled customer service representatives to track customer progress through each phase of the
ordering process.
ALLSTATE RESEARCH and PLANNING CENTER: Investigated auto loss experience differences by grouping
similar Makes/Models. Parsed VIN to get proper make/model identification, assigned a risk level to the similar
types of vehicles, and used these results to make additions to Underwriting and Pricing models.
KRAMES/STAYWELL: Designed and developed a database system that included sales and product data,
statistical modeling coded with VBA inside an Access database. The resulting product allowed the client to
determine weaknesses in their sales chain.
Health Monitoring Project: Repaired existing Access database of confidential health records.
OWEN-DUNN INSURANCE SERVICES: Analyzed Captive Insurance schemes to identify the levels of self-
insurance risks. This allowed the client to better represent the Captive scheme to their potential customers.
Developed software to allow management to better allocate agent resources by internally trading away low
commission business. The software took data from AMS, compiled sales and commission data and identified
insureds whose policy support would be moved from the agent to general staff. This allowed agents to

concentrate on higher commission business.
INVESTMENT CAPITAL ADVISORS: Designed and installed web site, put together PPT sales presentation.
DISTRICT 7 ADVISORY COUNCIL: Expanded and repaired existing member database, kept track of dues
payments and sent out email communications.
MISCELLANEOUS PROJECTS: Using data from the California Air Resources Board, examined the potential
effects of passage of SB 1224 that would allow smog test exemptions for vehicles newer than model year 1976.
Examined the contributing factors of standardized test score results using California STAR testing summarized
database.
Windsor Specialty Auto Sales, Windsor, 2007-2013
GENERAL MANAGER: Major duties were the evaluation, purchase, advertising, sales and shipping of collector
and specialty cars, with emphasis in Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Mercedes M-100, Porsche and cars that run on
Biodiesel. I was in charge of administration, vendor management, bookkeeping, web site and DMV/BOE
compliance.
Underwriting System Online, Auburn – 2004 to 2007
SALES REPRESENTATIVE: Underwriting Systems Online is a provider of web-based underwriting and pricing
software. I acquired new business, managed clients and potential clients, and worked as a link between the
clients software needs and our programming staff. We installed software with a nationwide carrier and
numerous general agencies. The number of customers and revenue tripled during my tenure.
Allstate Research and Planning Center, Menlo Park 1984 to 1998
RESEARCH ANALYST/MANAGER: Expertise includes project development, implementation, management and
results analysis for a variety of insurance products.
Important projects include the identification of credit score as a critical predictor of future loss experience. I took
weighted samples of insurance records, cleaned data, matched anonymously to credit reports supplied by
outside vendor, determined the effects on loss experience and developed credit groups that were used to
underwrite business. This work led to discovery that credit reports were the most significant outside data used in
Underwriting and Pricing.
Developed a multi-line discount by determining the effects on profits, loss ratio and termination costs of
automobile insureds with a homeowners policy.
Managed cession model for several states with residual markets. I rank-ordered all policies based on actual and
pure premium to set a cession cutoff score. A de-churning factor was applied to help keep borderline policies in
their current status. These heavily regulated states were some of our most profitable due to our ability to cede
very costly business better than other carrers.
Defended company's underwriting practices before the Texas Department of Insurance.
I co-founded a team of underwriting, pricing, financial and marketing researchers for a better understanding of
insurance environments, leading to faster and better implementation of programs.
Managed staff of statisticians and programmers.
Experienced with rating plans and filings, underwriting guidelines, loss analysis, premium generation and
termination rate analysis.
Presented to Officers and Sr. Directors.
