America – A Brief Essay

I taught 5th grade for six years. My favorite topic was the Civil War in American History. Our team made the units very special and pulled materials, simulation games, texts and videos from the most authentic sources possible. We tried to bring it alive by studying actual battles, families and leaders. How the Southern army wandered into Gettysburg, looking for shoes, but found the Northern army instead. We memorized the Gettysburg Address. We understood the generosity of General Grant’s acceptance of General Lee’s surrender by letting the southern soldiers keep their horses, guns and ammo.

Without apology and without exception, America is the greatest nation to have existed on planet Earth. It was established by men and women who desired religious freedom and were willing to sacrifice their all to obtain it. The strength of their commitment was tested many times and in many ways. A very enlightened group of men and women were brought together to establish a free government, a republic, governed by the people, of the people and for the people. The American experiment was started and continues through today. The Constitution has been established to create separation of powers and protect state verses federal rights. Amendments and the Bill of Rights brought protections for many liberties which we consider inalienable and God-given to all men. These must be preserved through educating and training future generations on their precious and invaluable nature.

There have been strong leaders throughout our history to prolong and strengthen this nation. President Lincoln stood to support the constitution and bring a peaceful and compassionate resolution to the separatists’ issues. President Reagan tore down walls for the cause of freedom here and around the world.

At no other time in our nation’s history have these rights and freedoms come under such direct attack from within our own borders and are actively being destroyed by those sworn to protection them. There is a dominate voice in our nation and world which belittles and denigrates the principles of freedom and traditional values that are required form citizens of substance and strong character.

It is our duty and obligation to support the cause of freedom through voting our conscience, studying and understanding our past and making efforts to preserve the blessings we enjoy to our children and their children. Charter schools are one of the best defenses of honest education unadulterated by teachers’ unions, common core and other government actions.
