Assembly Team Member
My duties consist of the assembly and disassembly of M88A1, M88A2, and all variants of M113A2, and M113A3 tracked vehicles. I am skilled in the techniques of troubleshooting hydraulic, pneumatic, oil, fuel, electrical and fire suppression systems. I am trained in the extraction and replacement of power packs, mechanical transmissions, fuel tanks, booms, all assemblies, components, and major modules in the hull to include brackets, seats, racks, wiring harnesses, floor plates, suspension components, spades, winches, nose piece, deck panels, doors, grills, and hatches. My tasks include diagnosing defects and determining trade techniques to be used in the modification, repair, rebuild, overhaul and inspection of M88A1, M88A2, M113A2 and M113A3 tracked vehicles. I receive work instructions or inspection reports outlining in general terms the deficiencies and work to be accomplished. Determine own work methods, plan sequence of work and are responsible for over all accomplishment using a full range of trade techniques and work methods. M88A1: Power Pack/Transmission Work; disassembly, overhaul, assembly, installation, inspection and testing of power packs and transmissions and all parts related. This includes radiators, oil coolers, fire supression systems, exhaust systems, oil lines, fuel lines and coolant lines. Also generators, oil pumps, fuel pumps, heads, head gaskets, exhaust manifolds, exhaust manifold gaskets, PTO shaft, oil sending units, fuel sending units, fire sensors, tachometer cables, Auxilary Power Unit, air filters, oil filters, fuel filters, transmission filters, pistons, rings, valves, intake manifolds, crankshafts, glow plugs, injectors, cooling towers, fans, turbos and electrical wires. Also ran the test pad on the M88A1 which consisted of testing and setting pressure limits on the boom, spade, hoist winch, main winch and mechanical tranmissions. Tested the APU, APU refuel/defuel and driveability of vehicle with load on boom and hoist winch.
mechanical transmission: 100-120 psi on a dial gauge, turned on by PTO switch located on the bottom right of the subplate. Once engaged it pumps hydraulic fluid ( in this case 10w oil) to all the hydraulic systems.
boom valve: 90 psi on a dial gauge, extends and retracts boom and is located on top right of sub-plate. The boom itself is tested by lifting 12,500 lbs with hoist winch and driving a vehicle length in reverse, the same steps are followed with 24,000 and 36,000 lbs. This is to ensure that the welds are holding and no fractures or bends anywhere.
hoist winch: 125 psi on a dial gauge, set limit on combination valve by lifting 54,000 lbs. 2-4 inches off ground with hoist winch in low gear. Pressure is set but adjusting pressure bolt on the combination valve.
main winch: set between 88,000 and 92,000 lbs of pressure on an electronic gauge that you hook in to one of two small slave receptacles. Pressure is set by connecting main winch cable to a peice of heavy framework with an electronic pressure gage on it and you pull it against the vehicle and set pressure by adjusting the pressure bolt on the main winch valve in front right of vehicle under the floor plates.
M113FOV: Power pack/Transmission work; Performed TI (technical inspection), to determine what repairs are needed, disassembly, overhaul, assembly, installation, final inspection and testing of power pack/ transmissions and all parts related. Parts are the same as the M88A1 with the exception of ramp pumps, external belts and pulleys. The radiator in the M113FOV is not on the power pack it is attached to the grill mounted above the power pack and is gravity fed. Worked in " prep to ship" which is the catch all before the vehicles go to final paint. This is where all the defects are found, troubleshot and repaired. I took a great sense of pride to work in that area, it really gave me a chance to learn the vehicles both M88A1,M88A2 and M113fov extremely well.
