RESUME for
ROBERT C. OWENS SR .
Summary of Achievements:
I have experience in engineering, design, coordination and development of piping and instrument
drawings, loop drawings, wiring diagrams, junction box wiring, electronic board level trouble
shooting, drawing and reading of electronic schematics, and lay out drawings for several
different types of instrumentation projects. Also familiar with the engineering of various types of
field instrumentation including control valves, writing instrument specification data sheets and
procurement of the instruments.
Project Engineering for upgrades in a refinery setting for over 2 years from conception of project
to startup. Multi discipline engineering of this project (i.e. mechanical, civil, piping, process,
electrical, instrumentation, control system, etc). Managed design team and construction.
Manage and coordinate various types of projects for Engineering, communications, computer
systems, instrumentation, oil production, etc.
Worked over 11 years offshore and on land oil field in the position that is known today as a
completion engineer.
Engineering and programming of various vendors’ PLC and DCS hardware and software.
Configuration of both complex and simple control algorithms in many different
p rogramming languages. Development of several databases for many different applications
required for Instrumentation and Controls Systems Engineering throughout the Petroleum
and Chemical Industry. Designing and drawing H M I operational graphics using many
d ifferent manufacturers’ PLC and DCS systems. I am very knowledgeable using IEEE 1131
s tandards programming languages. This allows me to go from PLC to PLC or DCS to DCS
w ith very li t t le t raining specific to the manufacturer used. Programming and design for the
most part is very similar between vendors, just a different key stroke or two.
Programming and installation of various telecommunication devices such as radar guided
i nstruments with radio communication to PLC. Programming the PC, PLC, DCS, and field
devices allowing them to t ransmit and received required data. Allowing the customer to
reduce his maintenance budget and provided a much more accurate reading of all product
t ank levels on a continuous basis.
Review shutdown logic for emergency shutdown system, make changes where necessary
and documenting the entire program. Writing a complete operation's manual during field
testing of each shutdown scenario both in technical and simple verbiage for operating
t raining. This manual explained in detail what caused the shutdown and how to recover
f rom the shutdown the most efficient manner to save life, t ime, and money for the customer.
Writing of startup procedures and operations manual, describing how to control the entire
u nit in the most efficient manner. Developing and documenting the operations of each
complex loop strategies. Help in bringing units on line, tuning of loops, and t rouble
shooting. This resulted in finding many process, instrument, mechanical design errors
causing the customer to reevaluate the entire unit, changing out instruments, redesigning
p iping and adding two additional column giving them the desired quality of product.
Lead Instrument and Controls system Engineering for refurbishing of a shutdown
A mmonia Plant. Also author and presenter for the published material "Re-Instrumentation
of an Existing Ammonia Plant" published April 15, 1996 for the Gulf Coast Ammonia
P roducers Association. This gave the company a big boost in business throughout the Globe
by Ammonia Producers.
Coordination and development of a complex M icrosoft Access data management program to
automate data exchange between engineering disciplines associated with various
engineering projects. Giving the company and edge when bidding on various products by
cutting down on man hours required to fill in various specification, drawings, and other
documents required to successful completion of projects. This also eliminated many errors
d ues to verbal communication of information needed during a multi discipline engineering
p roject
Control Engineering, safety shutdown design, implementation, operator t raining, engineer
t raining, and startup assistance for a Wet Lap machine, bail handling system, and bail
conveyors along with associated equipment needed for operations located in Mississippi
R iver Corp. recycle paper mill. Wrote an operator's t raining manual used for t raining and
guidelines for everyday operation of the Wet Lap equipment. Giving the client the ability to
meet customer's demand and provide a backup system allowing them t ime to correctly
maintain the exciting system.
Successful completion of accuracy f low calculation upgrade and start up assistance for
Pump Station #1 of the Alaskan Pipeline using an Allen Bradley PLC and magnetic f low
meters. Giving the customer full control over the many companies pumping crude through
t he Alaskan Pipeline insuring fairness and conforming to governmental laws and
regulations.
Acquired a working knowledge in several of today's DCS/PLC software, including:
Honeywell, Moore Products, Siemens, Bailey, Allen Bradley, Crestron, Modicon, and other
systems. Windows 3.1 to xx, Access, dBase, Excel, Access, MS DOS, Unix, VAX, Pascal, C++,
A DA, etc.
Training Designers and Engineers in a classroom setting giving them the advantage of
k nowing ISA standards for symbols shown on P&ID, PFD and loop drawings. Provide the
company with a well-rounded understanding of the design requirements and standards of
common good engineering practices.
Writing of Instruction Manual, and presenting a complete analysis of ORCAD and PSPICE
electrical and circuit simulation programs. Developing and programming an interface to
combine the two programs into one allowing students to do analog and digital circuit
simulations with one interface. This resulted in a grant given to the University for the
continuing the research and software development by the university after my graduation.
