As an RN at Charlottesville Surgical Center I work as a Pre Op RN (for injection procedures),
OR RN (for injection procedures and spine cases), PACU RN (for injection procedures) and a
scrub nurse (for spine cases).
As the preop RN I prepare the patient for surgery. Upon arrival at the surgery center the patient
comes to the Preop area. My duties include but are not limited to:
Obtaining a medical/family/social history on the patient
NPO status
Pain Level using the numeric pain scale.
Vital signs and blood glucose level
IV line start
Going over paperwork and making sure all orders are in and consents
are signed
Administer pre surgical medications if ordered.
Assess the patient's mindset and attempt to relieve any anxiety they may have
As a scrub nurse in the OR, for spine cases, my job duties include but are not limited to:
perform a long hand scrub at the start of my shift and before
surgeries.
I am responsible for maintaining a sterile field at all times.
I set up my back table and open sterile supplies onto it.
I work with the circulator to ensure we have all supplies and
instruments needed for the case
make sure my fluids/meds are all labeled correctly.
with the circulator I perform an instrument, sharps, and sponge
count before incision.
I assist the surgery by anticipating the surgeon's needs and making
sure no one breaks sterility.
I keep track of how much irrigation is used and the amount of
medications are used on the field.
If any specimens were taken I ensure that the circulator has
correctly labeled the container before I pass it off to them.
I also ensure any implants that were used have been correctly given
to the circulator
After the case I perform closing counts with circulator
once closed and drapes are off I clean up my back table.
As a circulating RN in the OR for our spinal injection procedures my job includes but is not
limited to:
opening the tray in a sterile fashion and all of the needles and syringes
the surgeon will need.
Interviewing the patient before each injection to verify the correct patient,
correct side and correct procedure
I then transport the patient from the preop area to the operating room.
Assist the surgeon as he draws up all the medication on a sterile
fashion for each procedure.
Prep the patient
perform a “timeout” by calling out the patients name, allergies and
procedure we are doing.
Document the entire case including times, medications,
patients position, prep solutions etc.
After the procedure I wipe the prep solution off of the patient, dress the
injection site. Assist them in rolling over onto the stretcher, and I
transport them to PACU.
As an RN in the PACU (after infection procedures) my job includes but is not limited to:
fully assessing the patient including level of consciousness and poison
level using the numeric pain scale and getting a full set of vital signs every

pain management, assisting patients to achieve a desired
comfort level.
administering medications as ordered by physician.
maintaining the head of patients bed at physician ordered degree.
discharge teaching to the patient and family members.

As the circulating RN:
check the posting slips in my room and making sure we all the
equipment and instruments needed for the surgery.
interview the patient in preop, make sure they know the surgery, surgeon,
and site of surgery. Obtain medical/ surgical history.
confirm all consents were correct and signed by both surgeon and
patient.
confirmed patient's surgery site was marked by surgeon on patient's

answered all questions patient and their family had regarding the

count all instruments, sharps, and misc items with them. Give
