Responsibilities Overall strategy and leadership of the Adam & Company Group Risk
Functions, incorporating Credit Risk, Market Risk, Operational Risk, Regula tory
Risk and Anti Money Laundering.
Key responsibilities included discharging the duties and responsibilities of a
Director and Approved Person of a banking and financial services group. In
addition, to ensure a fit for purpose risk management framework is in place to
guarantee compliance with regulatory and RBS Group requirements.
Key achievements Developed and implemented a regulatory risk and operational risk
management framework to ensure the business was fully compliant with
RBS Group requirements;
Significantly reduced the time taken to close identified risk issues across
all areas of Adam Group (average time over 6 months reduced to 2
months);
Delivered significant improvement in the fraud risk profile by introducing
robust systems, controls and procedures;
Reviewed, developed and implemented processes and format to report all
risk functions management information to Directors (Executive & Non
Executive) and Senior Managers across Adam Group;
Restructured Adam risk functions to ensure a fit for purpose team structure
in place to support all parts of the Adam Group in risk management
activities;
Improved significantly the Staff 'YourFeedback' opinion survey in 2007 and
2008 resulting in highest scores within Adam Group and positive
benchmark compared to other RBS Risk Functions;
Carried out a review and enhancment of the governance structure of Adam
& Company to ensure a fit for purpose regime was in place;
Lead role in stakeholder management of the regulator of the offshore
subsidiary resulting in significant improvements in the relationship.

Offshore Head of Operational Risk (Jun 02 – Sept 06)
Responsibilities Developing and delivering strategy and leadership of the RBSI Operational
Risk team;
Providing the executives with up to date, relevant and accurate knowledge
of the RBSI risk profile;
Continuous development and improvements to the operational risk
framework;
Timely, relevant and informative reports to the key committees (including
RBSI Board, Audit Committee Risk Management Committee and
Executive Committee);
Liaison point with internal and external lawyers regarding legal claims and
agreeing strategy to address these (including court appearances if
required);
Engagement with key stakeholders at senior directorate level rega rding
any adverse emerging trends or issues.
Key Achievements Introduction of the monthly Operational Risk Report for executives and
senior management across RBSI. This provides:
update on initiatives being undertaken within the unit;
overview of emerging risks/trends e.g. emerging reconciliations issue;
management information (including trend analysis) report on losses
and customer concerns (complaints);
update on status of current Group Notifiable Events;
current opinion and trends from analysis of Key Control data.
Chaired Project Control Committee to successfully exit a number of high
risk/profile connections across RBS Group without any adverse reaction or
press comment.
Identified an emerging reconciliations issue from my analysis of data
(whilst overall outstanding numbers were reducing, the age of unreconciled
items was inceasing). The issue had to be escalated to senior directorate
and a plan agreed to address the issue. At the time the issue was
identified in excess of £10m was at risk. Agreed actions, included having a
dedicated team to address the unreconciled aged items, putting a new
policy, process and controls framework in place that would prevent this
happening again. Improvements were also made to management
information together with training of senior management to ensure full
understing of the reported trends. The actions saved £9.75m of the funds
at risk and RBS Group adopted the policy Group wide.
Following review of Offshore Operational Risk Function by Royal Bank of
Scotland Group Risk the unit was recognised as having a number of
procedures and databases that were well ahead of Group expectations.
These were rolled out to other divisions as best practice.
