Determination of the fatigue limit of metallic materials using lock-in thermography

Diploma Thesis

Aluminum 1050 H16 dog-bone specimens were subjected to fatigue loading in

various stress levels and were concurrently monitored by an infrared camera. The

fatigue loading tests were carried out on an Instron servo-hydraulic machine

capable of a maximum static and dynamic load of 100 kN.

Using IR thermography, the fatigue limit of aluminum 1050 H16 was determined

and found to be at 75% of the σuts. These results were in agreement with those

obtained from the conventional Wöhler’s curve, demonstrating that the

methodology based on the combination of IR lock-in thermography is not only

easily applicable but reliable as well.

The methodology is proven to be fast, reliable and experimentally economic

determination of the fatigue limit in composite materials by means of a

combination of nondestructive inspection method, namely infrared lock-in

thermography.

be financial independent from my family. I have been a volleyball player for 15 years

(Hraklis Ioanninon 1999-2007, A.G.S.I 2008-2013) and I had the honor to be the coach of

the younger girl team of A.G.S.I. for the year of 2012-2013 a great experience working with

younger people teaching them patience and perseverance in order to achieve their goal.
