Based on the autobiography, Twelve Years a Slave, celebrated in the City of Saratoga Springs and
Plattsburgh, NY, third Saturday in July. (A multi-cultural history and education annual program rooted
in American History)
I directed and coordinated this program for more than a decade in the City of Saratoga Springs in an
attempt to bring awareness and focus on the history of African-American’s in the community. This effort
included multi-venue program coordination, acquired funding, extensive community and regional outreach
with all levels of government and private sector individuals. The project provided a 15-year platform for
writers, historians, artists, in an environment of welcome to the larger multi-cultural community for the
purpose of celebrating Mr. Northup’s life while brining focus to the history and culture of African-
Americans in the community. This project involved year round coalition building with community leaders,
politicians, clergy, women’s groups, NAACP, Centro Civico, Center for Law & Justice, Albany, NY, non-
profits and colleges. To include media outreach, grant requests, writing and editing, talent search, contracts,
program creation and design.
July 20, 2013, the 15th year, this program took place at Skidmore College, Filene Hall with 62 descendants,
along with actress Lupita Nyong’o, Fox Searchlight and New Regency Films staff. Solomon Northup Day
represents the only program of its kind in the City and the first time an African-American has been
