My job is mainly consultant end-urology, open onchourology and reconstructive
surgery. The field of end-urology is my main concern and interest. I could manage
cases by urethroscopy, cystoscopy, TURP, TURBT, PCN, and PCNL

in 2002 as consultant with another two consultants. The hosp. manages the general

This hospital cares about treatment of families .This hospital is 600 bed hosp. And
include all surgical and medical departments and recently added highly equipped
neurosurgery and cardiothoracic theatres and wards. It has also a highly organised
surgical and medical ICUS. The urology dept. has 60 bed ward.
I established 3 days outpatient clinic and 2 days theatre. I succeeded to develop an
end-urology unit with xenon light source, digital camera, lithoclast, and
nephroscope. Lastly I added the bipolar technology to the unit.

I completed my higher surgical training in Urology in December 2000. I was senior
registrar in Urology in the training programme. I worked with Mr Moawad
Mahana (FRCS Eng.) .He is one of the senior consultants in Urology in Cairo and. I
was appointed as a consultant Urologist and Head of the Urology Depart. At kobri
El kobba hospital in January 2001.
Kobri elkobba armed forces hospital is one of the central big hospitals in Cairo. It is
1200 bedded hospital. A well-equipped dedicated, integrated, Urology Unit has
recently been built with facilities for outpatient clinics. It has a recent Urodynamic
unit & a unit for trans rectal ultrasound & biopsies. The Urology Department has
its own separate 42-bedded in-patient ward. I joined as Head of the Urology Depart.
In Jan.2001. Apart from providing general urological services, my main interest has
been to develop the end urology & urology cancer services served by the hospital.
I arranged for a weekly clinic to discuss the management of cancer patients guided
by the international protocols especially the Royal College guidelines. I established
two outpatient clinics for general Urology problems supported by registrars &
SHO.The unit actively participates in teaching and training programmes for doctors
& nurses.

As part of the training program I was sent to the UK to finish the FRCS in 1996. I
passed the primary FRCS in Cairo & I got the required score of the IELTS. I was
accepted in the ODTS of the Royal College. I did my interview at the royal college of
surgeons of England by Mr Kirk. The college offered me 18 months job from
Feb.1997 to Aug. 1998. MR A.SHANDAL FRCS, Consultant general surgeon, Royal
Gwent Hospital, sponsored me. I joined the urology unit in August 1997 as SHO to
Mr Richard Gower. The Urology unit is a well equipped with separate 24-bedded
in-patient ward & separate busy outpatient clinic. It includes two weekly outpatient
clinics for each consultant (there are three consultants.) to deal with general urology
problems. In addition there is a weekly haematuria clinic, Impotence clinic & BPH
clinic. There are three pays for flexible cystoscopy, a separate room for urodynamic
studies & another one for TRUS & biopsies. Mr Gower gave me a chance to gain
experiences in end urology & percutaneous stone surgery.
In the next 6 months Worked to Mr Bates who was interested in reconstructive
surgery, mainly orthotopic bladder, radical prostatectomy, & infertility surgery like
vasovasostomy.
It was fruitful job that gave a chance to proceed to higher training jobs when I came
back home.

According to the advice of the Royal College I started SHO job in general surgery as
preparation for the final FRCS exam. There are 6 consultants general surgeon
doing the basic surgical procedures in addition to a special interest to each of them.
Mr Gately has special interest in breast surgery. He provides me a chance to gain
experience in this branch & laparoscopic surgery.
