Oct. 2001-June 2007

Background: TCH is the largest Children’s hospital in the USA and has a “magnet” status Nursing designation and is rated 3d in the Nation in Children’s Hospitals with 750 beds and over 40 specialty clinics in

Houston and other cities in Texas, and over 50 physician offices, as well as Home Health program. The hospital has a large level III NICU, PICU, Cardiovascular ICU, Cystic Fibrosis Research Center, Bone Marrow

Transplant, Solid Organ Transplant, as well as General Surgery.

Supervised 3 full time Infection Control Practitioners

I coordinated two different IHI 100K Lives Campaigns at TCH-one to reduce Central Line Infections through the use of the IHI insertion bundle (piloting in PICU and to be spread house wide) and another focusing

on reducing Surgical Site Infections. Our team submitted abstracts to CHCA on PICU CBI Process Improvement/Rate reduction, which were published in their forum.

In 2006 / 2007, I organized the IHI Hand Hygiene improvement house wide to include all healthcare workers, patients and visitors, and physicians to improve hand hygiene at TCH with executive team support. In

addition, Infection Control initiated the CHCA IHI central line maintenance bundle to reduce central line infections in cardiology intensive care (CVICU), pediatric intensive care (PICU), and neonatal intensive care

(NICU), and the associated step down units.

Through 2004-2006, I managed a multidisciplinary team that statistically and significantly reduced bloodstream rates facility wide through the introduction of Chloraprep for preparing central line insertion sites, the

use of Chloraprep in maintenance of intravenous lines, and education of Nursing staff. I co-authored the education program regarding the care and maintenance of central lines, and the IHI Central line bundle.
