PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Senior Software Engineer November 2013 - Present
Videology Group Baltimore, Maryland
• Refactor online ad clickstream log data scripts to be more performant as team's lead Big
Data developer. Develop Cascading Java code, Hive and Pig scripts, and Oozie
workflow and coordinator jobs.
• Mentor team members on Big Data technologies including Hadoop, Hive, Pig, and Oozie.
Senior Cloud Engineer May 2010 – November 2013
Sotera Defense Solutions/Potomac Fusion Aberdeen, Maryland
• Design and develop Hadoop MapReduce programs and algorithms for analysis of cloud-
scale classified data stored in an Accumulo database. Implemented in Java, these
programs involve successive sets of mappers and reducers and produce statistical reports.
• Develop various data transformation scripts for novel social network algorithm vetting.
Written variously in Python, Java, and HiveQL, these programs perform ETL for data in
HDFS, sending them to flat files, Postgres, and other databases for visualization.
• Adapted Mahout's Bayesian classification algorithms to train classifiers based on sets of
known documents containing sensitive information, which are in turn used to
classify large numbers of documents quickly in a Hadoop environment on secure clusters.
Software Engineer May 2005 – May 2010
CBS Interactive/CNET Networks Bridgewater, New Jersey
• Contributed to ongoing migration of daily Data Warehouse ETL processes from
Orchestrate onto Hadoop system consisting of 10 machines with 80 CPU cores and 20
terabytes of storage. Developed and enhanced efficient Python MapReduce scripts to
take full advantage of the parallelism of the Hadoop architecture.
• Designed and implemented new ETL processes as part of the Data Warehouse
Infrastructure team. Written in Perl, Python, and shell script, these jobs parsed, analyzed,
and classified several hundred million Apache log records daily, loading the results into
several hundred atomic and summary tables, some with tens of billions of records.
Senior Software Developer April 2001 - April 2005
Auction Management Solutions Tampa, Florida
• Designed and developed integral features of AMS's latest generations of their industry-
leading OnLine Ringman real-time remote auction bidding software system. Written in
C++ with native Win32 function calls and embedded PostgreSQL queries, these valuable
features are used for hundreds of weekly auctions in the United States and abroad.
• Conceived intricate formulae and developed subsequent PHP and PostgreSQL code for
the generation of vital auction sales statistics, generating larger revenues for AMS.
Research Programmer September 1998 - December 2000
Enkidu Research Tampa, Florida
• Designed and developed a full-featured Web crawler, used in a leading-edge word
prediction software package to aid the communicative disabled. Written in C, the
application efficiently downloads gigabytes of raw HTML source code from a set of user-
specified domains, extracts the English text, and builds a 100-million-word corpus of
various literary genres. Served as the principal researcher and implementer on this $1.5
million grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
Senior Programmer/Analyst March 1998 - September 1998
Nielsen Media Research Dunedin, Florida
• Maintained and enhanced production utilities for the internal Metered Sample
Management group. Written in C with embedded Sybase SQL, these programs served a
vital role in the processing and storage of television viewing data and preferences.
Technical Consultant June 1994 - February 1998
Computer Sciences Corporation Champaign, Illinois
• Served as the Technical Lead of the Credit Bureau Interface team, coordinating the
development of the latest Credit Profiler system, a full-range module allowing automatic
real-time credit checks to the national bureaus.
GRADUATE CO-OP EMPLOYMENT
Mathematical Researcher/Software Developer June 1990 – December 1990
Jet Propulsion Laboratory Pasadena, California
• Performed mathematical analysis and enhanced software to improve the pointing
accuracy of the 34-meter beam waveguide antennas of the NASA Deep Space Network.
