K ilkenny. I previously worked in Arklow and in a number of schools in Dublin.

International education and work experience is a philosophy I am passionate about and which I have tried to convey
to my students for years. I have taught a variety of subjects which include, Physical Education, History, Technical
Drawing, Woodwork, and Art during my teaching career. For the past thirty three years I have worked as a guidance
counsellor placing students in colleges throughout Europe the US and Asia. In the 1990’s I initiated a process that
resulted in the location of a third level education facility in Kilkenny.
Strategy and Operational Planning/Compliance
I have overall responsibility for Curriculum Planning in St. Kieran's College. My duty, apart from
writing my own subject plan is to ensure that all subject plans and policies are up to date, presented in
accordance with the regulations set out by the Department of Education and are available for inspection at all times.
Familiarity with subject areas, relevant technologies, and Department of Education regulations is
essential as is the willingness and ability to persuade staff members to comply with the regulation and
framework. Each subject plan has to include relevant metrics to achieve stated aims and objectives.
In my role as chairperson of the Kilkenny 3rd Level Initiative I wrote a number of submissions to the Higher
Education Authority in support of the development of third level facilities in Kilkenny. As a Guidance
Counsellor I am in constant contact with third level colleges and the Department of Education to formulate
strategies and policy regarding access to colleges and the role of the Guidance Counsellor in schools.
Staff Management
The compilation of School Policies involves the collaboration of all school stakeholders, staff, parents,
principal and board of management.
As Department Head it is incumbent on one to take responsibility for the design and implementation of an
appropriate curriculum and communicate constantly with relevant others and management in this regard. This
role also includes budget submissions and their management.
I was directly responsible for large numbers of staff in diverse situations in a number of management
positions I held in the United States and in Ireland.
As a young student in Limerick I represented the student body on the academic board of the college, I was
class representative in University College Dublin and Trinity College, as a Guidance Counsellor I am
representing the diverse views of a large number of people all the time. In the 1990’s I successfully negotiated with
I T Carlow to offer a suite of courses in Kilkenny and sourced suitable accommodation and funding. There has
always been diverse views and opinion on many of the committees and boards on which I sat or chaired. I have
developed well honed strategies to facilitate such situations.
Mentorship
Mentoring new staff and trainee teachers also falls within the remit of school subject department heads. As
chairperson of the Kilkenny 3rd Level initiative I successfully negotiated with Glanbia for the funding of an
administrator for the project. I was directly responsible for the day to day work and overall input to the project of
this person. My primary role at present is mentoring students through a most critical time in their lives, outlining
career options available to them, assessing their strengths and weaknesses and offering advice and counselling
Fundraising
Fundraising was a vital part of the 3rd level initiative and subsequently to support NUIM's development.
My committee successfully negotiated significant funding for the project from the two local authorities in Kilkenny.
As a supporter of the Special Olympics Ireland I was both an adjudicator and fundraiser since its inception.
Throughout my time in education I have found it necessary to support initiatives I have been involved in
through fundraising activities, be it a gymnastics club in Dublin a musical production in Arklow or hurling or
soccer in Kilkenny. I successfully negotiated with industry, government agencies and the GAA for sponsorship and
funding for the development of sporting facilities in st. Kieran’s College.
Marketing
Much of the fundraising undertaken in the 3rd level initiative involved promotional and marketing strategies.
I am also very much part of the brand which is St. Kieran's College. This brand is based on the holistic
philosophy of education highlighted through academic and sporting excellence. My dual role as physical education
teacher, athletics and hurling coach while continually monitoring the academic progress of students in my role as
Guidance Counsellor, is integral to the development and maintenance of this brand.
In my business enterprises I worked on building brand awareness through below the line marketing
strategies and was responsible for the semiotic construction of all branded materials. I was also
responsible for brand consistency across all marketing communication mediums. From 2000 to 2007 I was
responsible for PR in St. Kieran’s College; this work included regular contact with local print media and radio
and organizing other promotional activities.
Recruitment
As a member of numerous interview boards I have initially screened people for jobs and courses in
education and business and subsequently interviewed them.
Communication
My job as Guidance Counsellor involves constant communication and deliberation with students, parents,
teachers and 3rd level institutions, arranging talks, presentations and relevant speakers. I have had an
active role in the organisation of the ‘National Conference of the Institute of Guidance Counsellors of Ireland’
on a number of occasions. These events included press launches, networking, arranging social activities and
coordinating talks and discussions of relevant topics.
Cross C ultural E xperience
I have worked in Ireland, UK, USA, and had enterprises in USA, Hungary and China. My students have
attended colleges in UK, Europe, USA, and Asia, recently I initiated and organised the teaching of Chinese in
