REGOGNITION / AWARDS
Best Paper Capacitor and Resistor Technology Symposium, October 2005 Prague, Czech Republic.
(Involved the application of Six Sigma methodology to address a critical quality characteristic).
Led team which won 2009 Innovision Award established to distinguish businesses which set new
standards for innovation in finding, developing and retaining profitable business.
2009 Featured Inventor at KEMET (award initiated in 2007). Author/co-author of 28 US patents.
Two time winner of prestigious Club of Excellence Award instituted in 2006 and bestowed on the top
performers in the company.
Six time winner of KEMET Special Recognition Award Winner between 1989 and 1998.
Graduate of inaugural KEMET Technology Leadership Forum featuring industry leading educators from
institutions such as MIT, Harvard Business School and Cal Tech. Served as an action learning team
mentor and featured speaker at subsequent Technology Leaders Forums.
BUSINESS EXPERIENCE
KEMET ELECTRONICS CORPORATION, Simpsonville, SC 1984 – 5/2013
ISO 9001 and ISO/TS 16949 certified manufacturer of electronic components for automotive, computer,
communication, industrial, medical and military applications. World’s largest producer of tantalum
capacitors.
Innovation Center Management Positions (1999 – 5/2013)
Led global team which identified, developed and introduced technologies and new products in order to
increase productivity, reduce costs and provide improved product quality, reliability and performance.
Hosted monthly Innovation Center Quality Operating System Review Meetings. Reviewed critical
performance metrics and status of continuous improvement projects.
Successfully led numerous continuous improvement activities as illustrated by the following examples.
Led multi-functional Six Sigma team responsible for 10x improvement in critical quality
o
performance characteristic. Failure to correct this issue threatened the viability of a product line
with annual sales exceeding $100M. Communicated progress to company president weekly.
Designed series of experiments to systematically demonstrate mechanisms for incomplete
o
coverage of internal surfaces of porous substrate following chemical impregnation process.
Developed improved processes resulting in 10-20% increase in internal surface area coverage.
Equipped assembly machines with tooling to allow for precision control of key parameters
o
determined to cause failures. Failure rate dropped several orders of magnitude and expensive
and unreliable inspection procedures were eliminated.
Discovered root cause for long term variation in intrinsically conductive polymer reactive coating
o
process that had plagued line for years. Led to the development of a proprietary off line process
to optimize monomer bath chemistry and a patented process to prevent changes in on line bath
chemistry.
Led project team which resolved quality issue with major customer resulting in retention of
o
multimillion dollar account. Communicated project status during weekly conference calls and
customer site visits.
Led several lean projects as illustrated by the example below.
Led lean new product development project. Utilized value stream mapping and lessons learned-
o
best practices case studies to drive implementation of improved project portfolio management,
project planning, targets and measures, design and process FMEA’s resulting in a 30% reduction
in phase gate development cycle time and improved technology transfers from Innovation Center
to low cost manufacturing.
Developed manufacturing model for Innovation Center which identified lean opportunities in
o
batch processing based on changes in product mix between small experimental batches and
larger production batches. Implemented fast change outs, eliminated unnecessary batch holds,
streamlined PO approval process.
Sponsored lean project which led to 50% reduction in cycle times for high priority batches.
o
Improvements resulted from batch prioritization process, high priority batch pull system, OEE
studies on bottleneck processes, cross training, and targeted off shift coverage.
Utilized lean process mapping and lessons learned methodologies to identify improvement
o
opportunities in patent application process. Effort resulted in implementation of claim review
board, modified preliminary invention disclosure (PID) template/process, and global PID review
board.
Identified issues with management processes and implemented effective solutions as illustrated below.
o Developed and implemented Technology Transfer Process which focused on transferring
technology, not a recipe. Elements included increased participation by receiving team earlier in
development process, mandatory participation by sending and receiving plants during review of
critical project documentation such as FMEA’s, Targets and Measures, and issues
faced/overcome during development. Required statistical analysis of process capability studies
conducted at both sending and receiving plants and documented safe launch process.
o Championed the use of PMI based project management tools. Worked closely with teams to
write and execute project plans. Invited by CTO to introduce the methodology to his staff in
Global Development Meeting.
Senior Engineer/Quality Control Group Leader (1984 – 1999)
Responsible for identifying and developing process and product improvements. Much of my focus was on
reducing process variation, improving product quality, training and operator empowerment.
Developed novel control charts based on statistical principles for processes subject to natural drift.
Procedures for calculating the control limits and making process corrections were incorporated into a
Quality Operating Document. Subsequently introduced closed loop control systems to further reduce
variation. These improvements led to a 4x increase in cpk for critical process characteristics.
Established Kaizen teams that empowered operators to participate in process improvement activities.
Advocated the use of statistical inference methods. Provided companywide training in basic statistics
and statistical inference.
Wrote programs that tracked process outputs by machine to identify needed process corrections.
Worked with outside commercial and academic labs to develop methods to characterize semiconductor
cathode material. This work led directly to two major breakthroughs resulting in a two fold increase in
the conductivity of the material.
