Projects

Omnicopter - An Novel Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) Platform

May 2011 to Present

Members:Yangbo Long, S. Lyttle, A. Gelardos, S. Bai

Common Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) MAVs possess a limited mobility because of the inherent

underactuation (fewer actuators than degrees of freedom). In order to realize fully controllable MAVs, I

worked on the design, modeling, control and optimization of an overactuated MAV, the Omnicopter, which

has two central coaxial propellers and three perimeter mounted ducted fans with servo motors performing

thrust vectoring.

Multicopter for Hackensack University Medical Center

July 2013 to Present

Members:Yangbo Long, S. Bai, A. Gelardos

Page3

Hackensack University Medical Center, CACI Technologies Inc., and Stevens Institute of

Technology have partnered to give students the opportunity to prototype, build, and deploy

innovative imaging solutions for capturing images and videos in a battle field environment. We were

requested to provide an autonomous MAV system to capture real-time videos based on the Omnicopter

platform.

My responsibilities include:

Finely turned on-ground/in-flight control parameters and optimized the MAV structure;

Integrated a camera for video downlink and a Global Position System (GPS) for localization;

Communicated with the assessment & acceptance side for project updates, reviews and demos.

Micro-miniature Ducted Single-Propeller Aircraft

May 2009 to June 2010

Members:Yangbo Long, M. Xu, C. Li

This project involves the design, construction and control of a ducted fan MAV, in which a single propeller is

enclosed by a shroud with fixed stators and movable vanes underneath to control its orientation. This

arrangement provides several advantages which include safety of operations, increased thrust efficiency, and

noise reduction.
